As Chris has already posted, the City owned locomotives and the Holiday Express trainset are about the only items that will be moving to the new location. a later phase, after the turntable is built, will create a few extra spaces, but not much. This according to one plan I've seen. We are looking at options on what to do with our equipment.

I thought I would include a quick throw-together map of our existing location and where the locomotives would be moving to.

The lines also show present and future streetcar and light-rail lines, two routes which will border the new property.

In terms of connectivity, a very good trade indeed. Much closer to market share potential.

Where exactly is the new site? Under the 99E bridge just north of Caruthers St? Looks like an awfully tight site....

Will the existing turntable at the Brooklyn roundhouse get relocated up to the new site as well?

Thats what I am wondering. If I read the map correctly and it is in the area between the UP and Oregon Pacific lines I see the Union Viaduct and buildings all around. This site looks too small and crowded, and about 1/3 of the size as the current roundhouse property. If it is a bit north of that site and to the east of the substation then I see a bit of vacant property there.

By comparison look at the facility that the Fort Wayne group built when they had the chance to design their own greenfield site. Note the wide open spaces and room for future expansion in all directions. Also note the lack of neighbors.

Both groups optimized their unique situations.

It appears Fort Wayne had an opportunity to secure property in a light industrial setting and perhaps the land acquisition price was reasonable; whereas in Portland, the group was searching within an urban area where land is a premium, especially when tied with the requirement for access to the mainline. The Portland parcel has the added benefit of being located near the Science museum and near future extension of the light rail system.

Nonetheless, both sites are tied to the three key real estate criteria....location, location, location.
