I think somebody is crying wolf.. or someone got confused when Pete Lerro did his recent night photo shoots with 611 and 1218? Anyone see this "article"?

Sure this isn't a recycled leftover from early Spring, say April 1?

Let me see if I have this straight:

I'm supposed to take even the least bit seriously a semi-literate Internet post that manages to mangle the name of the railroad in question as "Norfolk and Southern"............ do I have this right?

EDIT: And just to add to this: It apparently originated off a forum about SUBWAYS?

The only thing really left to do is invoke a flooded Pennsylvania quarry, and/or mention the sale of E8's to the Mt. Washington Cog Railway or the sale of the Grand Canyon RR steamers to the Verde Canyon RR..........

The first trip is scheduled to be a doubleheader with a NYC Hudson they found in a barn next to a mint condition 57 Chevy...

Meanwhile, next time get it right, it's supposed to be on 4/1, not 11/14....

It kills me! You guys will believe anything published. It's actually the ex-PRR K4s, 1361 that's going to be used!

No, Richard. The State of PA just gave #1361 to Mario Lemieux for use on a tourist railroad in Canada. Don't you read the news? ;-) I heard it was UP #838 that NS was looking at. Just for the frame, though.

I just read on another forum that NYS&W 141 is expected to emerge from the sea, on some rails just exposed by a nor'easter down in Cape May. The 2-8-2 is predicted to be pulling a string of LIRR Ping-Pong coaches-

Pardon the pun, but the local newspaper coverage of this event "stinks"..................

Agreed. It sounds like an intern or a resident without any knowledge or appreciation of the city's past, much less the museum, wrote this thing.

In fact, since the article relied on Facebook for its background information (albeit, the VMT's Facebook business page listed here: http://www.facebook.com/search/?init=sr ... 6328636..1) I searched for the author and can assume he's only in his mid-20s.

This would be a major triumph to the steam community if it were true. All kidding aside, how serious is NS's new administration about restoring 611 back to operational status. I have heard that they are more lenient about steam ops than the past 'suits' were but there are so many factors to take into considerations before the even begin to sit down and draw out a time table of what needs to be done and actually show up with the proverbial wrench in hand.

Again, from what I have heard and read 1218 is in sad shape and is virtually just an empty shell while 611 was put away as if she just dropped her fire and could easily hit the rails again.

In you HONEST opinion and not fooling around, how likely could we see 611 riding the rails again in the next, decade or so?

611 last steamed before the current regs were enacted. It would need a full boiler and firebox sheet thickness scan. I think 1218 would be closer to operational, as it's boiler condition is a known quantity and it's repair was already a work in process.
I wouldn't expect either to have a needle move on the backhead for many years. I'll save political commentary for more appropriate forums, but I will say that by my estimation, funding will be tough to come by for quite a while.

I think that if the union pacific and canadian pacific stepped it up a notch with their steam programs, norfolk southern may be more easily persuaded to bring back their steam program. If that yellow ribbon express becomes a reality, the chances may also get better, just like it (sort of) did with the american freedom train, shortly after that if I'm not mistaken, (the at the time) norfolk western decided to restore 611 two years BEFORE the merger with the southern railway, as well as the chessie steam specials that occurred right after the the american freedom train...

We need men like Bob Claytor to become head of NS, then maybe 611 might return to operation.
