I am looking for any movie/game/book/tv show/comic that has featured a F40PH. I want this for my web site www.f40ph.org so far I have got. I am hopeing this will draw greater appreciation for this unit and not make it seem so obscure to the general public, as well as just being an interesting reference for rail fans.

The Verdict staring Paul Newman (1982). F40 #213 makes a cameo through one of the gate doorways at South Station in Boston. This scene is a last glimpse of the interior of South Station just before it was renovated to its current appearance

"Pretty in Pink" (1986) about 23:39 into the movie- 2 F40PH's pulling an Amtrak train past main character Andie's house. (Can't tell what the numbers are from the lo-res YouTube version.)

There was an episode of "Happy Days" which aired in the late 70's that had a brief shot of an Amtrak train. I remember the show because I had just come off night shift, and my daughters thought that I should see at least one episode of this cultural landmark. In this show, one of the characters was talking about what a wonderful car his 1955 Chevy was, but we didn't really see the car until more than halfway through the program, and when he opens the garage, there sits a 1953 Chevy (we all caught this error because the girls remembered a 53 Chevy convertible we had in the late 60's.) The railway angle is that the car was supposedly rebuilt after a collision with a train in the 60's, and the collision is shown with an Amtrak locomotive! Talk about lack of research! (not sure if the loco was an F40PH or a 500-class (SDP40F?))

There's also one in the 1978 cult classic "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" about halfway through the movie shown in Phase 1 paint pulling an Amfleet train (looks like a 'San Diegan.') Again, the number's not visible, but it's definitely an F40PH.

It may not be exactly defined as "pop culture" in terms of film and television however in some internet circles the F40PH is somewhat of an icon used on several internet boards. The gag being the FP40PH is made of pure awsome and has quzi chuck norris type abilities. It also has the power to kill "furries".

4chan?!? Oh, dear, oh my............ oh, please, no........

I have only a passing acquaintance with that website, necessitated by my working with/for one of the largest Japanese anime conventions in the USA in security and radio ops. "4chan" somehow became an issue one year, when they asked to hold/host a panel discussion, which was initially approved and then rescinded, and they pledged to hold said panel anyway, leading to some "issues" between the convention organizers and the fans of the site.......

Far too much of the site's traffic centers around pornography, near-porn, and other such generally questionable content. Recently, spammers have hijacked much of the site, overloading the various boards with posts directing/luring naive users to foreign servers ready to load viruses and malware on users' computers. It's possible to peruse the site safely, but tread gingerly, make sure you're not on a work or public computer, and have your antivirus set to "paranoid". For all practical purposes it's unmoderated, and if it's not blocked by your work computer it should be for many reasons.

Why am I bothering telling you this? Well, there *is* a "Transportation" images forum there, but last I checked a few minutes ago it's overwhelmed with both spam posts and the typical 4chan idea of "transportation," girls riding bicycles/skateboards/etc. in unsafe degrees of undress, as well as one or two posts complaining why no one's talking about the new Chinese high-speed train. However, at one point a year or so ago, someone alerted me to a sick bit of humor that was appearing in the most popular forum, one devoted to "sexy beautiful women": some user had asked for pictures of a "train" (think in terms of male and female interactions in various states of undress, not something with wheels and tracks), and a whole bunch of crazed nuts responded with any and every image they could hijack off of Flickr, etc. of a railroad "train", locomotive, etc. ("Whoo whoo!"). For the brief while it lasted (a couple hours or a day at best), an image forum usually devoted to female nudity became an increasingly hilarious free-for-all of wacky double-entendres, epic silliness about "here's another train, whoo whoo!" and even frantic, sloppy efforts to "photoshop" nudes and trains together........ I believe the height of it was reached when someone crafted a "cover" of Trains Magazine together with several underdressed females and various headlines about the same..... I wonder if the folks in Waukesha managed to grab any of those images for laughs.........

Seriously, just........ just don't go there unless you REALLY want a sociological experiment into the depths of Internet depravity, lunacy, and free-wheeling........

Yes I know about all that here is a link with serveral photoshops and such http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/f40ph (mostly work safe but some photos contain bad words) but to remain professional I think I might leave that out as I can't see it helping me any. A good "chan" site about trains is www.1chan.net it sometimes gets flooded with vulgar spam from 4chan but the mods mostely stay on top of things there and don't take to B.S.

Well, at least SOMEONE under forty besides Sheldon of CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" has heard of an F40PH, or any other diesel model for that matter.............

Oh great, we've finally found a way to get an internet meme on here? I thought this website had escaped the horrors!

Anyway, while I would definitely say that the F40PH is one of few (now semi-)modern diesels that many consider as "awesome", the internet certainly has found a way to make even something as great as that seem stupid. I'm half scared to find a Rule F340PHoto somewhere.

It's fair to say that the reason why the F40PH pops up so much in pop culture is the same reason why they became popular to railfans: there were many of them around, they became the head of many (also now semi-) modern passenger trains, and they are so simply shaped that they're not ugly.

Also, they're probably easy to draw

I think F40 213 appeared in "Disaster on the coast Liner" as well. As I recall, it was the first unit painted in the PH 2 scheme.
