Kelly,

Many thanks for the informative posts.

Does the crown brass get pressed into the driving box?

Since everything will eventually come apart on my locomotive I thought it would make sense to replace the four crown brasses. They’re considerably smaller than what you’ve pictured. Mine fit a 3 inch axle and have about a 3/8 inch wall thickness.

What are your thoughts on using C932/SAE660 versus C936?
C932 is readily available, in multiple shapes, from local suppliers but not the C936.

Regards,
Dave

Hi Kelly--

Going back to the coaches, could you clarify something for me? When SRR does a complete from-the-sills-up rebuild on a wooden passenger car like the one shown in your photos, what is the new load-bearing arrangement under the siding?

Is the removed truss replaced more or less in kind with new wood, or is it being replaced with a fundimentally different load bearing arrangement--a kind of box girder made from glued and screwed marine plywood?

When I was talking with Bill a couple years ago he explained this to me, but I'm not confident I really understood what he was trying to teach me.

Thanks,

Erik

We call it Strasburg Unibody Construction. The trusswork is replaced with a box girder consisting of balltic birch plywood screwed and glued to the frame work and to the side sill. Joints are all lapped between the two outer layers which consist of 3/4 and 1/2 inch sheets. Horizontal joints are in the window posts away from the opening corners which see the greatest stress. The major failure point for wooden cars is from water wicking into the framework at the bottom of the window posts due to flexing of that joint. With the plywood having no joint there, it allows the skin joints to remain tight.

Speaking of cast iron welding... and speaking of propoganda... what do you think of these strong opinions? He goes on at length about the "right way" and "wrong way" to weld cast iron, and why. His company has done superb work for WRM.

Richard, Mr. Mitchell and Anthony,

Good evening and Happy New Year! The RMLI is working to obtain additional funding. Until then work on Engine #39 at Strasburg is on hold.

I can tell you that we had a meeting with representatives from Suffolk County, New York State and the Federal Government all at the same table on Thursday, January 21, 2010. Many words of encouragement were exchanged. Opportunities for grant writing are before us, as are continued efforts working in the private sector.

Good news will be forthcoming as soon as we have it.

Thank you for your interest and continued support,
Don Fisher, President

Kelly,

Are the boxpok drivers in the wheel lathe from the UP Challenger? I believe you were contacted to turn them previously? They look too small to be from the 844, Just curious.

Thank you for the post. Very interesting....as always.

Regards,

Randy
