In Lackwanna MU trailer cars, the original wooden window sashes were replaced with metal sashes that had the latch mechanism inside the sash. On surviving cars it is often the case that either the thumb lever on the latches is broken so that the window cannot be raised or the spring that operates the latch pin is broken so that the window will not stay in the raised position. Are such sashes repairable? Is there any source for parts?

Any information or advice would be appreciated.

A tourist RR I used to be associated with had the same problem with the same cars. They resorted to using sticks to prop the windows open, and constantly reminding /warning patrons to no mess with the windows.

Didn't Adlake make those latches? I think they're still in business, maybe you can check with them.

I have the drawings from Adlake, but they will be difficult to find, as they have been boxed up since 1987. I think they are complete enough to engineer, though.

I got them while I was general car foreman for Steamtown Foundation, and stopped by in Elkhart to visit Adlake. They gave me the drawings, but had no interest at the time in retooling to make those parts.

(I believe they are Model #25 sash, but my memory may fail me).

Would the parts lend themselves to CNC milling or weld fabrication?
