No, "6010" was K&T 10, not 11. 11 ended up as artillery/tank range fodder at the Abereen Proving Ground. On page 224 of Sulzer's "Ghost Railroads of Kentucky" (The second edition, and the edition reissued by Indiana University Press) there is a photo of 10 dressed up as 6910.

10, unlike the 4501/12 was purchased new by the K&T. The 10 is a Baldwin product of 1920, with 24x30 cylanders and 56 inch drivers, compared to 4501's 27x30 cylinders and 63 inch drivers. The previoulsy-mentioned 11 is a Schenectady product of 1922, and is only slightly larger than the 10 in cylinder bore, but otherwise was roughly the same size. From the few photos that are around it appears to be a pretty standard, plain-Jane Baldwin medium sized mike of the era. 4501 is larger, as the K&T had to adjust some clearances on their railroad to accomodate the larger locomotive.

When Morgan and Hastings visited the K&T as part of their "In Search of Steam" series, the 12 was not in steam that day and either the 10 or the similar-looking 11 was working.

At KRM we had the K&T's ticket cabinet and several large boxes of never-used tickets, all printed by Rand McNally. Evidently the K&T bought a 500 year supply of tickets. I have one, from Steans to Co-Operative as a momento.

David -

So what is the status of K&T #10? Not restorable? I remember from photos, that she had a "wierd looking" sandbox for some reason. I think if someone decided to make a list of steam locomotives that ran fantrips in the "post" steam era, the number 10 might well be left off.

If I remember correctly, K&T 10 was evaluated at the same time as 630. To say she's "not restorable" is a bit of an over-simplification. I believe it was determined that she would cost more than 630, but nothing is "unrestorable" if one has deep pockets.

The original plan of many years ago was, I believe, to turn 10 into a "representation" of one of NC&StL's 600-series mikes, which had small drivers and were similar in size. The L&N Vanderbilt tender owned by TVRM was acquired with this project in mind.

So is that plan now dead? Or will it be done some time in the future?

Obviously they were "sisters" for quite a while on the K&T. For the most part, their numbers and wheel arrangement were the similarities.

Here is the copied info for comparison:

Kentucky & Tennesee RR No. 10 Chattanooga, TN

Wheels: 2-8-2
Builder: Baldwin Locomotive Works
Build Date: 05/1920
Construction No.: 53182
Empty Weight: 264,000
Weight on Drivers: 204,000
Driver Diameter: 53
Tractive Effort: 51,500
Boiler Pressure: 195
Cylinders: 24x30
Fuel: Coal
Gauge: Standard

Southern Railway No. 4501 Chattanooga, TN

Wheels: 2-8-2
Builder: Baldwin Locomotive Works
Build Date: 10/1911
Construction No.: 37085
Empty Weight: 272,900
Weight on Drivers: 215,700
Driver Diameter: 63
Tractive Effort: 53,900
Boiler Pressure: 200
Cylinders: 27x30
Fuel: Coal
Gauge: Standard

As a side note, K&T #10 & #11 were nearly identical. If not for lack of funding (yes, even then) both possibly could have ended up in Chattanooga. Unfortunately #11 went to the great roundhouse in the sky after K&T gave up steam. The story I have always heard is that the government acquired it and somehow "accidentally" destroyed it with an errant artillery round. Does anyone know the real story?

One additional item: With TVRM's 50th Anniversary approaching, and knowing that folks from all over the country have come in contact with 4501 over the years (or 10/6910, 630, 610, etc., rode a TVRM excursion, or visited the Chattanooga property to ride the onsite train), we are interested in acquiring material to illustrate the history of the organization. If you have photographs, flyers, souvenirs, etc. that you'd be willing to donate, it would help document that history and potentially could be put on display during the milestone year of 2011.

Better pick up a copy of Steam's Camelot by Jim Wrinn. On page 111 which is part of the Jim Wrinn/John Craft all-time listing of SR/NS excursions, the October 9, 1965 trip by 6910 (K&T 10) is listed in black & white. So, there you go. One day of mainline excursions by K&T 10 --- That beats none, right? For the record, she actually ran TWO trips that day from Chattanooga to Cleveland (TN) and there would have been two more on the following day if things had gone as planned. Luckily several noted documentarians were present on Saturday such as then UT student Dave Ingles. That's the same J. David Ingles of TRAINS/CLASSIC TRAINS fame.

I think it'd be a good excuse for a photo freight, or some sort of double header.

Hello All,

Are there any updates on 630 and her new (to her) tender?

Mostly from what I've seen, the focus has been getting the siderods and several appliances back on. Crossheads, coupling and connecting rods are all on, as well as the lubricators and the power reverse gear.

Glad to hear that 630 is getting closer and closer to operation. Hope to come to down to Chattanooga next year for the 50th Anniversary of the TVRM. I can't wait to get some video of the festivities.

Nice someone posted recent pics of SOU 630. I was down in E. Chattanooga last summer, route the TVRM train down to Georgia, and never got to tour the TVRM shops. I only saw 630 and 4501 tenders parked on along side the tracks as the train went down and into town.

K&T 11 went to Aberdeen Proving Ground and was intentionally destroyed for target practice. I have heard that testing for anti-tank rounds was the method of choice, though that could be very wrong. I also remember hearing something about trying to find out what happened to boilers fired upon while they were under pressure as part of the exercises. Wonder if anyone who knows what actually happened reads this board and could enlighten us?

I seem to recall another steam locomotive of that era being used for target practice at Eglin AFB in Florida, a C&O 2-8-0 (pic in Trains Mag). In the early 60s, steam locomotives were still probably considered expendible, especially by the US govt. Too bad about the other K&T 2-8-2, but there are always just so many dollars to go around.
