After reading with interest the recent thread on large "whale" type tank cars, and the apparent loss of that gigantic car at Galveston, I stumbled upon this preserved "junior" tank car, along highway 29 going into DeQuincy Louisiana. This neat little car apparently was built in 1963... and looks like it served some of the PPG facilities that are down the road outside of Lake Charles Louisiana.. Lettered SACX 3010, this attractive display greets residents and visitors to this western Louisiana town which is also home to the small DeQuincy Railroad Museum. Perhaps not a truly "rare" car by museum standards, yet, this 47 year old car looks good..

It was nice to see this small attractive display, which was nicely illuminated at night.

Also makes me wonder, how often do you see a car or piece of equipment owned by a museum positioned off site as a "billboard" to attract potential visitors. ? ( although I do not know if this specific car is owned by the museum or the city )

thanks for that neat junior tank car picture... looks much better today then it did....

although not per say of the "junior" variety, this neat car managed to survive, and I saw it out in Claysburg Pennsylvania last year.

likely a car destined for scrap in Hollidaysburg or Altoona, and was pulled out before it was scrapped.

There is a larger car on the NWP at Willits, in Mendocino Co. I believe it was used in fire fighting service in the Eel River Canyon.

At least one AC&F tank car is preserved in the rolling stock collection of the Central Pa. Chapter NRHS at Whote Deer, Pa., not far from AC&F's now-closing Milton, Pa. plant, which built many thousands of such cars (and covered hoppers) over the years.

I remember that for years AC&F had a replica of its "first" tank car preserved outside the main entrance/office of the Milton plant. Wayne, do you know if said car is still there and has its fate been determined?

Canada Starch tank car CSTX 22, is at the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario. This car was built by AC&F in 1934 and donated in 1985.

She has been stored indoors for the last twenty years and should (finally) be restored this year. It's not a big job, but other more fragile equipment has been a higher priority.

The Reading tank car at Claysburg, PA, is one of several cars kept as relics by the Everett Railroad. It has recently been on the shop track for air brake repairs and single car test.

Yakima Valley Trolleys in Yakima, WA has Union Pacific UP 68130, a 7,850 gallon tank originally for hauling sulfuric acid. Class O-50-7 built in May 1958. It was acquired by the Yakima Valley Transportation Co. (UP electric railroad subsidiary) in 1980 to provide water to wash volcanic ash off the street trackage after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

The Western Railway Museum had a Key System car body out on Highway 12 for a couple of decades as a sign pointing to the museum. It was later put back on trucks and placed indoors. It was decided that a 19th century car was too rare to do that job.

We too have some tank cars. There is a 1920s Shell Oil Company tank car that the company painted up to present to the museum. Lots of rivets on that one!

We also have a Western Pacific MOW tank car with an interesting history. It was used aboard the WP's Diesel powered car float Los Plumas to contain oily bildge water rather than pump it into San Francisco Bay. Occasionally it would be moved ashore to a facility that had an oil seperator.

From California, I do not recall which museum, there is a tank car that was used to carry bulk shipments of wine. Two Buck Chuck anyone?
