if I take my financial calculator and plug in 225K present value, 75K future value, 180 periods (15 years on a monthly basis), 0.5% per period (6% per annum) I calculate payments of $1641 per month which adds up to $19,689 per year. That's taking it down to scrap value + a bit of jewelry money as described.
I'm sorry, I forgot to allow for interest I could earn on the part of the monthly payment that is a "Return of Capital" or "Depletion Allowance". Actually, $1,640.79 per month would still make me whole.

All this number crunching makes me wonder how much money the engine earned for the MILW during its service life. Naturally there is no way to calculate that unless you knew exactly what it did and what earnings such service created or shares thereof. Who knows...in passenger service the return may have been less than zero, just not as bad as older, less efficient power would have been.

I do always marvel at the GP-9's I see still in service on the CN/IC, still earning money for their owner after 55 or so years. I also think about how, when I became old enough to start appreciating trains back in the 1970's, if I had seen 55 year old motive power not only would it have been steam but not even particularly modern steam.
