The Western Railway Museum has SCCX 662 built for Shell Company of California by Standard Tank Car Company in 1923. It was built to haul petroleum products from the Shell refinery in Martinez, CA. Shell had the car cleaned and repainted inside and out in Houston prior to donating it to the museum in 1991.

This is an ARA type III tank car that holds 10,098 gallons. It is in very good condition. It is stored inside Carhouse #3 to protect it from the weather.

This thread started out labelled "junior" sized tank cars, but after the first two listed by Dean and Stephen, most of the balance seem to be "standard" sized cars. This comment is not a criticism of what has been posted (I like tank cars of ANY size) but just to raise a question; what would the definition of a "junior" or "mini" sized tank car be? Maybe 6,000 gallon capacity or less? Or perhaps a maximum length? Or....?

With today's railroad tank cars going in the 20,000 to over 30,000 gallons, I think of anything around 12,000 gal as junior. Early, small capacity tank cars are interesting, though. Were any "wooden drums on a flatcar" saved besides a handful of vinegar tanks? My vote for favorite mini tank car is this 3000 gal below.

Not sire what I would call "junior" in size.... however all the tank car talk is very interesting... and it is great seeing what older cars survive around the country. Here is an interesting SP car... still lettered SP and in theory active service, this SP car is in the UP yard in Avondale Louisana. So although not "junior" in size, its interesting as its a tank car apparently mounted on a flatcar. Photograph is current.

that link to that tank car on that abandoned Conrail branch is interesting... never new that car existed at that location, and would be curious to know if that is a current or recent photograph..

here is a ACFX car indoors at the RRMPA ... amazing how something that was so very common... now occupy space indoors at museums around the country.

does anyone have any history of this unique Strasburg car across the street ?

The Minnesota Transportation Museum had a small, 4000gal junior tank that was used as a auxilary for NP 328.

The tank car mounted on theh flat car was built prior to 1917, as evidenced by the single row of tank rivets, which makes it an ARA II class of tank. It also has a single safety valve and a screwed type of manway cover, which were present on ARA II types of tank cars. The safety dome platform was applied much later, probably in the 1950-1960 era, based on its design.

The Greenfield Village Railroad owns a 3 dome tankcar: UTLX 1328 in a black and white paint scheme. It can be viewed here.

GATX 55926 holds 8,042 gallons. It was donated by General American Transportation X about 1969 to the Trolley Museum of New York and sent by rail to Winslow Jct., N.J. on the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. P-RSL tried to charge demurage for the car while it sat there, but Stan Praster, a railroad employee and a member of Trolley Valhalla and Willmington & Western RR, was able to convince them that storage should apply instead. Because of the mistake, the railroad didn't charge anything, and the car was soon trucked the short distance to Trolley Valhalla's field in Tansboro, N.J. I forget how it arrived on the New Hope & Ivyland RR. Was it trucked with the rest of the Trolley Valhalla collection to Jobstown, N.J., and then to Buckingham Valley, Pa., when some of the cars moved there, or was it trucked back to Winslow Jct. and moved by rail to the New Hope & Ivyland RR sometime earlier? I don't know if ownership was ever officially transfered after GATX donated it to TMofNY. I can't find it listed as an asset of McHugh Bros. Heavy Hauling, Operator & Leasee of New Hope & Ivyland RR Co.

The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum rosters an ICC-103 8000 gallon tank car, ex-Eastman Kodak Company EKCX #52 at our museum in Industry, NY. The car was donated to our museum by Kodak in 1995. The car was last used in captive service in Kodak Park, and it was painted all silver with a faded 52 on the ends of the tank.



I am searching for a photograph or information of what this car would have looked like in full Kodak lettering while it was in interchange service. If anyone can help us since we would like to restore the car to its interchange service paint and lettering, that would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, although I had commented earlier on this thread, I realized that I had not included the tank car that is at our museum; the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson, Indiana. We have a 8,000 gallon single dome tank car built in 1917 by AC&F. The car is WCHX #1114 (Walter C. Haffner Company) and was donated to the museum by the Animal By-Products Company who had once used it for storage at their New Carlisle, Indiana plant. One of our members, Tom Travis, spotted the vine covered car one day while he was taking a ride on the South Shore to South Bend, Indiana.

Secondly, the reason I looked up this old thread is that Tom had found a photo of a couple of single dome tank cars on the internet. One car is painted for Sinclair and numbered SDRX 10896. I thought perhaps this car might have been listed in this thread along with its location. Of course, I now know that it wasn't, and I wondered if someone might have some info on the location of that car and might also be able to identify the second tank car in the photo.
