Thanks for starting this topic Ed.

Member and volunteer at the Passumpsic Railroad. A small historical railroad, we have various rolling stock in various stages of repair and disrepair. I agree agree it is difficult to restore items with limited time, budget, and manpower. We have many projects restored and in the works including locomotives, signals, rolling stock, railroad artifacts, and track work.

Roanoke Chapter NRHS has always been my primary affiliation, except for a couple of years in the mid-80s when I was heavily into motorsports. I first joined as a teen in the early 70's, and became a mechanical and excursion crew volunteer. I served 10 years as an officer and Board member, including 4 years (1992-95) as President. I was also trip chairman or co-chairman on most of our excursions from 1989 through 1994. On the mechanical side, I've been a senior executive general flunky for many years, and was the project manager when we upgraded 5 of our passenger cars to the then new (almost Amtrak) NS standards in the early1990's. I've also been a diesel mechanic (you don't know double jointed until you've replaced an Alco turbocharger), yard engineer, brakeman, and conductor at 9th St. Currently I serve on the trip committee, am a conductor on the "Southeast Roanoke not-so-scenic RR", official caboose chef, and am working primarily on the N&W 1118/CW Baldwin diesels projects.

Membership in the Chapter has led me in other directions also. From 1976 until 1982 I was an occasional volunteer engine crew member on the Southern/NS Steam Program (yes, believe or not they had volunteers on the crew until 1983). I was priviledged to work for "the Boss" (W. J. Purdie, to all you unwashed who think that that title refers to some singer from New Jersey........:)), and learn firing from Paul Brock and Carl Krueger. Although, I admit that I probably couldn't hit a moving firedoor now if my life depended on it.

I started working part time for the Roanoke Transportation Museum (VMT's predecessor) in 1977, and served as full time operations manager in 1978 & 79, then part time assistant operations manager (after returning to college) in 1980 & 81. I became a regular VMT volunteer in 1987, working in the gift shop, tourguiding, events staffing, and restoration until 2003. I served on the Board from 1992 until 1996. My last project at VMT was as part of the team that cosmetically restored 1218. Shortly thereafter, their then new, now thankfully gone Executive Director, "fired' all the volunteers. I recently have returned for their long range planning sessions working towards the goal of receiving NS's $1M challenge grant.

In the early 90's, I was also one of L&RP Editor Mark Smith's "mafia" when he was unsuccessfully trying to promote a "National Railway Preservation Trust" lobbying/education/accreditation organization .

During all this time back in the real world, I have had two past careers. One was in the automotive field, and one in industrial supply, where I worked for two different NS vendors. I now pay my bills as an insurance property & casualty agent. I'm also an active Civil War reenactor and event planner, and occasionally volunteer for the Lynchburg Civil War Museum.

I've been on the board of directors for Cascade Rail Foundation since 2004. We focus on preserving the heritage of the Milwaukee Road in Washington state. Our primary activity is developing and operating the South Cle Elum Rail Yard Historic District in partnership with Washington State Parks. The state owns most, but not all, of the historic district. We completed the rehabilitation of the depot in 2006.

I've been involved with Wilmington and Western for 30 years; I've been fireman, trainman, brakeman, donation seeker, coach cleaner, brush-cutter, track-worker, painter, shop foreman, boiler tube puller outer and putter inner, and even sheriff once or twice. Right now I have no official capacity, I'm just someone who gets called from time to time to help out. I've also put on a few photo charters about ten years ago. I'm also a full-time vocational instructor teaching boiler operation for a living and I hold a gold seal stationary engineers license. Additionally I am a referee for a woman's roller derby team.

Hello all,
Well, generaly annoying western US railroad preservation efforts seems to be what I am involved with the most.
Some of the victims of my harrassment are included on the following list.
The lucky ones are just subjected to financial abuse, others are the recipients of both financial and physical abuse by yours truly.

Nevada State Railroad Museum (Carson City)
Eureka and Palisade # 4 (an honor and privlidge)
Nevada Northern Railway Museum
Project 2479
Califronia State Railroad Museum
Orange Empire Railway Museum

Professionally I work for a Aerial Passenger Ropeway Manufacture as a Field Service Representative and annoy the amusement ride industry.

I got into this crazy business as a volunteer at the WK&S in 1963 at age 15. A few years later, after I finished high school and started college, I volunteered with Rail Tours Inc. at York and was also a paid employee working for Ed Blossom at the Magee Transportation Museum in Bloomsburg, Pa. from 1965 until the museum closed in 1972. After college, I was a volunteer with Railways to Yesterday Inc., the trolley museum at Rockhill Furnace, Pa.,, working in the shop and on track and was also an occasional volunteer at Seashore Trolley Museum. From 1981-2001, I was general manager of several shortlines in three states. I am currently a volunteer (again) at WK&S and also at the WW&F in Maine.

I started out as a teacher, became a professional railroader and retired from my third career as a newspaper reporter on Dec. 31, though I continue to free-lance for the paper and several other publications.
