It looks like she might be getting some well deserved care.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Interesting, how while back we had the "Ontario Canada Steam" thread a short time ago and we all wondering what was going to be done with CNR 6218. Well, here's our answer people. Hopefully, the Ft. Erie Historical Society can restore her to cosmetic condition, and put 6218 underneath a shelter to protect her from the elements.

Well, there are no plans to put it under shelter. The money is for the asbestos removal which was not properly done all those years ago. And this won't even finish it off. The Town will not allow any volunteers near the engine to do any work on it, and insists on having paid people do all the work, one of the reasons why nothing has been done. This piddly little bit of money will do very little to stop the rapid deterioration of this locomotive. This is a short term plan, and they do not have anything for the long term care of the engine, so in another year, if they don't plan for the future, it will return to it's current rate of destruction. It is unfortunate that the engine has had so little done to it over the years. A little preventive maintenance would have done wonders.

I was under the impression that all the asbestos (at least lagging wise) had been abated years ago. The engine does have a "new" jacket which is a total joke as far as jackets go, even the jacket on the backhead was replaced which leads me to believe that the lagging on the backhead was removed. Further more it is my understanding that the asbestos was replaced with fiberglass insulation before the "new" jacket was applied. If you look on the right side of the locomotive near the water pump, I recall there being a large hole in the jacket where this insulation was clearly visible.

Replacing asbestos insulation with firbreglass? SOmeone made a faux pas there didn't they? I mean removing the insulation is beneficial as it gets rid of the water logged insulation laying on the boileer. To replace the insulation with fibreglass and then install the jacketting only creates the same problem and issues with moisture.

Peter,

I NEVER once said that the people who "restored" 6218 the first time had anything resembling brains!

And Grant even offered those people advice on how to do the job right, but as you can see, they sure as hell didn't listen to him.

Oh the horrors that a trained eye can spot on that engine...
