Sounds like a typical case of a reporter not having a clue. As far as I know, the only steam on the NEC in recent years has been an occasional visit by Wilmington and Western to Wilmington Station for display.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Yeah, a steam locomotive "pushed the train" .....and the conductor "drove it"! Clueless. The rest of the story is questionable if not only because of the locomotive reference. I wonder what the real story is?

Well, I didn't see the reference in the story about the conductor, but obviously the reference to the steam locomotive pushing the train was in error. Yes, very shoddy reporting. BUT, maybe a few readers were convinced that an old steam engine DID save the day. So, in this instance, maybe a little bit of good publicity came out of it. Certainly can't hurt! Maybe some steam operation could even couple their steamer up to a coach and have a bunch of members in Philadelphia Flyers jerseys shaking hands with the ENGINEER, thanking them for the "rescue". Anybody out there a good publicist? And willing to "tweak" the story a little bit?

Why didn't the brawny hockey players push the train when the steam locomotive broke down? Hudson...sure. Keep digging it deeper!

I think this is where a "new poster" chimes in with something like.... "hi i Used to WoRk for NJt a while bacK and we used to have a steam engine hidden, i Think It Was a PRR K-4 that was recovered From a Quarry and, restored by a Secret Steam gRoup.. she comes Out and Pushed broken Down trains From time to Time"....

Probably a catenary power faillure or wire down on the NEC, so they pushed the stalled train with a diesel. Must have been an ALCO and the reporter understandably mistook it for a steam locomotive.
