I checked one of my Pacific Electric books, and found that this size is fairly common in streetcars, but there was no indication of whether trolley cars use "steeple back" or some other configuration.

At Ardenwood we use 2 3/4" x 4" (ten ton) and 3 1/2" x 6" (15 ton) both old style without a wedge. We have patterns for both

We have a couple of later West Side Lumber Co. cars with 3 1/2" x 6" with a wedge but haven't made a pattern for those...

Does anyone know if you can cast a wedge out of cast iron, or does it have to be steel?

you might check with the guys at georgetown loop, before last season they redid the babbit on a number of brasses, various sizes close to what you're talking about.....
They may have a spare or two by now and I do believe some of those journals used brass wedges....... The wedge is the thing that sits between the brass and the top of the journal box right?.....

This is a very common size for caboose journals. Almost all of the cabooses at the IRM use this size of bearing.

I have two patterns for journal brasses, I think they are 4 1/4" x 8". Now where the heck did I last see them.....

Both the "Durango and Silverton" , the C&TS, WP&Y and the EBT use many plain bearings of that journal size. I'm not sure if they are steeple backed or other but, the journal size is common to the larger 3' gauge rollingstock.

The Western Railway Musuem runs many cars with 4 1/4 X 8 plain journals and is presently in the market for two car sets of AAR A1 brass of this size.

I checked with mechanical dept. folks at Niles Canyon Railway. All of N.C.Ry. freight and passenger cars use 5x9 or larger journal brasses, so I cast a "no" vote in the poll.

P.S.: Also, Golden Gate Railroad Museum retrofitted all of their remaining plain-bearing heavyweight passenger cars (S.P. 5131 baggage-postal / tool car, S.P. 2979 lounge, three S.P. 80' "Harriman suburban" coaches) with roller bearings before moving them to Niles Canyon Railway.

The Whitewater Valley has a couple cabs with that size. Depending on the price we would be interested in some spares.

We have several cars that use 4-1/4" x 8" brasses. We'd be interested in a couple of sets, as well as wedges.

RMNE might be interested in some as well. Can you give some idea of what these would cost (each and in car sets)?

Like many others, we have two cabooses (NYNH&H) that use this size. A few of our older wood passenger cars likewise have the same size brass. Thinking of the future, it might be prudent to have some brasses on hand.

In kicking around our collection it turns out we have at least two pair of trucks that use this size... both from Swayne Lumber / West Side Lumber Co. log cars from Seattle Car & Foundry. We need a few.
