Merritt H. Taylor Jr., 87, president of the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Co. from 1960 until it was sold to SEPTA in 1970, died of respiratory illness Friday, March 26, at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Fla., where he had lived since 1973.

Mr. Taylor was from the third and last generation of the family to own the system of trolleys and buses known as the Red Arrow Lines.

In an echo of an era when after-work elbow-bending was a ritual for many, a nephew, Carter Taylor, recalled that among his uncle's innovations on the route through the Main Line to Norristown was a bar car, a coach where drinks were sold.

My condolences to the Taylor family. I had the pleasure of talking with him back in 2004 when he came to the PA Trolley Museum while Red Arrow car 14 was dedicated after its restoration.

The "bar car" was nothing less than the tavern-lounge of a complete streamlined train - the two Electroliner sets from the CNS&M. Both were saved, one at IRM and the other and Rockhill Trolley. Perhaps after restoration, the Red Arrow set can be dedicated to Merritt for his merits. We owe him the honor.

I thought Rockhill had its Electroliner set for sale.

The Rockhill 'Liner has been available for sale for a couple years now.

No takers (read as "serious offers"), one would suspect that just the sheer cost alone of getting it from Rockhill to anywhere would be significant, and as regards storage and restoration,, well let's just say deeper than deep pockets would be necessary. And of course, even having anywhere to run it, 'nuff said.

Hope springs eternal however, anything is possible
