Post subject: Locating Stats on Articulateds, incl height, lengt
PostPosted: Sat May 04, 2002 11:13 pm

Hello. I'm trying to find statistical information, including length and height as well as operational characteristics, on various articulated (as well as Northern type) steam engines. Specifically N&W Y3, N&W "A", N&W Y6-b, Big Boy, Challenger, UP9000 series.

Would you mind pointing me in the direction(s) to go after this information? Most N&W links do not have this data, so I'm really lost on that. But I'm not very "found" on the UP data, either

thanks

Check out Wes Barris's site www.steamlocomotive.com for most of the stats you are seeking. Whatever statistics he does not list on the site can be find my linking to the sites he has posted. UP's web site has the statistics on 4-6-6-4 #3985, and 4-8-4 #844.

Good luck,
Kevin

Chuck,

Find yourself a copy of the book "North American Locomotives 1900-1950", by Alexander. It is a great steam locomotive resource as it is all stats for dozens of locomotives.

Try the site listed below.

The Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society has a display of locomotives at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, California. This collection includes the only remaining UP 9000 series engine (these were 3-cylinder 4-12-2 locomotives), a Big Boy, a Santa Fe 4-6-4, a SP 4-10-2 (also 3-cylinder).

Once at the site, go to collection and then to the individual engines and you will find information for each.

Also, I believe Robert LaMassena has written a 2-volume history of articulated locomotives that is the last word on the subject. The title of these works escapes me at the moment.
