Sorry to make a subject named that, but it is about the damage to 2101 on July 23, 19??. I’m not talking about the roundhouse fire that made her un-operational. I was watching a YouTube video of the Chessie Steam Special that stated:

“This location is Grand Rapids [Michigan] where 2101 has undergone repairs for the damages that occurred in Michigan on July 23. New rods and parts were installed here at the Grand Rapids shop. The steamer is then scheduled to move to Chicago immediately after the July 23 trip. However the repairs delayed the trip until today, July 29. Today, it will pull a short freight train; destination: Bar Yard, Chicago.”

In case you wanted to watch the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDKLiTYe ... re=related is the link.

Thanks for all the info on the damage and what occured!

P.s. I accidently posted this same thing in classifieds...so if a mod wants to delete it, I dont mind!

Hmm, I'm not to familiar with '01. The only accident I've heard about was the roundhouse fire. I'll have to do some research.

Where would one go shopping for new rods for a Reading T1?

The Hagerstown Hobby Shop??

Rummage around in the "parts box" and find some things that might fit.... like from 2100, perhaps?

Howard -

Yes, that makes sense. Actually, there were, of course, two other Reading T1's that survived besides the 2100 and 2101, numbers 2102 and 2124. In addition, I seem to recall at the beginning of the steam excursion program on the Reading (the "Iron Horse Rambles") there were actually 5 of the 4-8-4's still on the property. I don't remember the number of the 5th one, but I think she was used for parts and eventually scrapped. I am not sure if she was still in existance at the time of this Grand Rapids, Michigan, incident.

I believe that #2100 had been moved from Baltimore to Hagerstown by the time of this incident. I also vaguely remember that a portion of its rods were removed for a repair to #2101, I think the front section on one side. Someone should have a photo of it in Hagerstown with part of one side rod missing.

2123 was retained for a parts source. She was stripped of goodies and cut up, I'm sorry to say.

I may have a shot of 2100 sitting on a fan track around the turntable w/o some rods, taken the summer I spent 10 years in Hagerstown (1980).

It's a B&W neg and no more darkroom, and no scanner right now, so it will be awhile until that shot sees the light of day.

Thanks for the information, do you know what happened to 2101, for it to get the damage in the first place?

I remember some story that when they were sitting in the scrapyard in Baltimore someone wanted to buy the 2100 & 2101 and stage a cornfield crash. Does anyone have detail on this story or is it another steamer in the quarry story?

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Memory may not be very clear but I was riding that trip and I believe that one of the eccentric rods failed. I remember the steam engine sitting directly under the overpass between Larch St and North St.

It turns out that my memory was not entirely correct. Another person who was far more involved with #2101 and was on the crew for the trip in question sent me a summary of his memory to post, as he does not post on this forum.

"Locomotive 2101 threw the knuckle pin between the front side rod and intermediate rod on the left side during the return leg of an excursion out of Grand Rapids. I had been the fireman on the outbound leg and was on the train for the return. It was never determined how the pin failed as it was never recovered. The rods damaged included both main rods, #1 side rod and L intermediate rod.

The 2100 was owned by Ross and was at thet time still located at Streigle Scrap in Baltimore. A crew from the 2101 went to remove 2100's rods while the rest of us stayed in Michigan to prep the 01 including rod removal, tram check, overall inspection etc. The left intermediate rod was sent to the blacksmith shop and under the guidance of our consultant; Paul " Pappy" Housman retired N&W foreman from East End, the rod was straightened. We also bored the rods on centers and made new brasses for crank and knuckle pins. This work was completed in the PM backshop in Grand Rapids using Steam special crew and Chessie shop forces.

The 2100 rods were set up for application on the 01 with new brass and changing the length of the main rod to match the 01's old mains. They were significantly different.

Rods went on and we went on a test run to catch up with the train set, which I think was in ?Detroit.

Lots of interesting T-1 rod failure information in the new T-1 book. Can not remember the publisher."

Can anyone identify the book mentioned? And any further details or corrections would be welcome.

Sounds like the gent is referring to the Outer Station Publications publication on the pre-Rambles history of the T-1s. Author's last name is Gotschall.
