1361 To Return To Steam

I suppose another practical question would be how much it's going to cost to put 1361 back together again and how much of that investment will need to be lost to have the roof sheets fixed properly (though I can share the fear of that never getting done). It might be simpler to spend the incremental additional amount to fix the roof sheet now (and get a full 15 year card and simplify future Form 4 work) rather than get by and suffer two or three years out of service (and consequent damage to the brand) when they finally "get around" to fixing the roof sheet.

I suspect the difference in full costing is negligible, but that would be something for potential donors to point out NOW.

Yes, puffing around the yard, giving cab rides, posing for pictures with the kiddees, sounds like fun to me.

This is new "old news" but glad to see some positive statements regarding the K4 (project) for a change. However.... seems a shame to put it all back together only to have to take it apart again (hopefully) to re-rerestore her.

I'm glad we are not traveling the route of quitters yet this is obviously between all or nothing, or rather, something is better then nothing. I concur with the other posters who ponder the question just how much more, with all the work to date, would it cost to simply get're done. Of course, I'm not privy to the current financing available and the short fall /delays that might arise based on funds available now.

A side note, the engine is still at Steamtown sitting in the roundhouse - last stall opposite side where the NKP #759 typically rests.

A little optimistic? At the rate thing move with steam locomotive restoration they will be doing great just to retrieve all the parts to one place by the end of the year. Yes the 1361 Boiler and tender are still in Scranton.

I hope I am proven wrong, but while I am one of the loudest cheerleaders for steam restoration, , this seems to be another side-track in the routing towards total reassembly for operation. Fix the damn boiler and then re-assemble her. Why take another half step towards partial qualification to run? The K4s is one of the most popular locomotives to ever run, and with significant progress toward the two Long Island G5's, it really seems to make better sense, keeping a wider vision, of what total rebuild might mean. FWIW, I've contributed toward rebuild of one of the G5's.
