The recent posting on To Detrain or Not To Detrain prompts me to this post.
I have also had this opinion regarding many other posts.

Often, I wish to express a simple " yea " affirmative in regards to a viewpoint that has already been expressed quite well. However, I do not wish to multiply words and repeat
what has already been stated. " Terminal Gas Bag-itis ", as described by Ross.

It would be a space saver, yet allow for quick response to simply click on the Like button. Smokstak has this, and it works well. Harry over there limits its use to 5 times per session.

Dave set his post up as a poll, and I was able to reply without gas-bagitis. No words required.

When creating a new post you can add a poll. The functions are at the bottom of the screen when you create a new post.

Personally, I get more than my fill of thumbs up/ thumbs down voting in inane news report comments!

I don't like the "Like" button. Why not? Well I'll write a long post with pictures and details of what we are doing, and instead of getting replies with comments I get a bunch of "likes". That tells me nothing. I have noticed that when the like button option is available there is a tendency for fewer text replies.

Don't add the option here.

The function of the "like" and/or "dislike" button(s) is simple: it adds the ability of the reader/user to feel like he has contributed an opinion to a subject or topic without actually making any real effort or expending any mental capacity in the process.

It's fine for the likes of Facebook, Parade Magazine, or People Magazine or variations of that ilk. It really has no use in anything above that intellectual level except as a means to generate mouse clicks.

Well, one nice thing it does (and I'll use Smokstak for an example here) is that it allows people who would otherwise create "attaboy" or "good job" posts (which generally don't add anything) to mark their approval of something. Smokstak actually lists the people who post their "thanks" with each posting. In a way, it also shows the casual reader how much merit a post has, especially in technical issues. However I wouldn't ask our site administrator to fiddle with anything unless it is just a mouseclick away.

Yeah, that's fine for the kiddies playing on Facebook or Fark. If you like that sort of place, fine, but don't track all the dirt over here after you wallow in the mud.

I'm like, don't do it here. It's like unnecessary.

I'm not to fond of this idea. As others have said, for a networking site (such as Facebook, myYearbook, or Myspace) it's fine... but for message boards? Ehhh.. I'd say no.

Leave the "Like" button on Facebook.

You guys are way too curmudgeony.
