As we lament the loss of so many steam-era fixtures (equipment, roundhouses, stations...), I'm wondering how many large scale sanding facilities are still standing.

From my window I can see the impressive sand tower at Steamtown NHS, a large afair over 50 feet tall and some 30 feet in diameter, which aside from the roundhouse, is the dominent feature of the Scranton yard.

Are there any other large-scale sand towers left out there besides this one?

We have a tower salvaged from a local mainline's yard here at the museum in Savannah. It is currently in kit form in our storage area.

I can second your note. The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum (Rush, NY) has the sanding tower from the B&O's Lincoln Park facility in Rochester, NY. Our tower is also in kit form with the hopes of someday putting it up somewhere around our restoration facility.

Hardware is gone but the reinforced concrete sand house and tower still stands at Spencer Shops.

IRM has an ex-GTW tower, that had been changed slightly for diesel sanding. The tower is mounted and standing (and one Christmas, was even decorated with lights by one of our non-acrophobic members).

Where is this tower from on the GTW? We lost the one in here in Port Huron about three years ago, unfortunately, and the coaling tower came down in the late 1970's. About all that exists is the turntable, which is currently inoperable, as CN has cutt all the leads to it. However, the car shops are still standing......

South side of Chicago, near Midway. How long is the table up there? I'm still looking for an available 110'+, working or not.

I'm doing some checking on that turntable. I have a shot of #6409 sitting on it about 1950 or so, so that means its at least 100 feet long. According to the shot, there looks to be room to spare. I would go out and measure, but somehow I have a feeling CN would frown on that a tad....
