Norfolk Southern steam to return with SR 630,than 4501

So, what are the chances they'll finally put a stoker on 4501 during her overhaul? They could always take one off that Canadian National engine they got down there.

Contrary to seeing them install the stoker from 5288. I could see her painted green and resemble close to a ps-4. The Canadian National lettering have already been removed from the tender.

The unwanted and unloved (at least by CSX) WMSR 734 has a Chinese stoker. How has that been working out?

Just offering a practical solution, although at the risk of damaging historic fabric, etc.-

Why? Hand firing 4501 is great for building moral fiber...........

I was about to comment that some of us youngins' that haven't fired her need an opportunity to "build character", as Bill Purdie would say.

Out of curiosity, anyone ever tried to adapt a stoker from one engine to work on another?

Western Maryland Scenic did just that with 734. I don't know where the stoker came from though.

If you read up about four posts, you will see that I noted that WMSR 734 has a Chinese stoker; I don't believe it came from another locomotive, though. I believe they bought it new. It is a copy of the Standard HT-1 and is available in the US from http://www.multipowerinternational.com. They have other steam appliances as well.

Using a stoker from another locomotive? The Reading built a whole class of 4-8-4s from the boilers of some very large 2-8-0s.

And to skew this thread a bit more....I wonder what one of the QJ class 2-10-2s would look like, if NS ran it through the shop and really Americanized it...

Sorry I missed your post but heck, TVRM could do that too... if they wanted. Seems like taking two handfired locomotives on the road for a month or two at a time would require a small army. All of whom would need to be fed, transported and put up in a motel. Guess I've worked on the railroad too long, haha.

For everyone else, why almost no talk of the 722?

It would be nice to see the 722 join 630 on the High Iron. Doesn't really look very likely....at this point. But after these last few days, I've decided that anything is possible.

This is from the Altoonaworks facebook page: An old SOU bunk car for MW service was spotted this week loaded on a flatcar bound for Altoona. Possibly for the OCS or steam program?? This makes three different black with white roof passenger cars spotted in the area this year. One is already being rebuilt. They have NW and SOU reporting marks.

I was wondering that same thing! Maybe if NS has a good turnout, CSX may realize that they made a bad choice...

Just so I understand this correctly, you believe Norfolk Southern started a new steam program after CSX wouldn't move a steam engine? Mr. Moorman read the news of what happened and said, "Hey, lets start our own steam program!"
