All of these passenger cars listed above are painted in N&W (NS) Tuscan Red & Gold Lettering.

Prior before 1993, most of the equipment was painted in N&W, SOU (Green & Gold Lettering), & SOU (Silver & Black Lettering). Some NS personnel during that time used to refer these sets as the "Circus Train". Other passenger equipment was provided by the NRHS clubs, tourist railroads, and private ownership groups.

In the last 2 years of the OLD NS Steam Program which was during 1993-1994, all of the equipment was rebuilt and repainted in the current NS paint scheme. The only time they broke the "All Tuscan Rule" was when they allow a trip sponsor to have 1 car as part of the set (it was usually seen near the end of the train usually before New River Valley & Mardi Gras).

During the 1994 NRHS Bluewater Trip from Detroit to Ft. Wayne, the only Non-Tuscan passenger car on that train was GTW 899 Diner "Silver Lake", which was at that time still in a VIA Rail Mod. This passenger now sports the correct GTW/CN Scheme (Green, Black, & Gold Lettering).

I'm certain during this time around NS & TVRM will be using an all matching passenger car set.

Wrong: NS was forced to borrow/lease a couple NCDOT coaches for their final excursions, after the damage in the Kinney Yard incident and a surge in ticket sales for what turned out to be the "final" NS steam excursions. Don't force me to pull up the video, but I recall 4-5 NCDOT Amtrak-painted cars on the last Greenville-Toccoa run.

What color will be on the power? Many of us have been presuming SR passenger green & gold, at least for 4501, based on what's been posted. But maybe NS will ask that that it be painted in some sort of NS scheme. This is a promotional operation so that may trump any historical accuracy (leaving aside the passenger colors on an originally freight engine).

This would be very interesting, remember 2101 in the Chessie Paint? It's their party and they can do what they want.

Also, SP 4449 was painted black and lettered for BNSF during 2000 and 2001 to pull the BNSF Employee Appreciation Special in the Pacific Northwest before it was repainted into the American Freedom Train colors in 2002. It would be interesting to see what an NS steam paint scheme would look like on either 610, 630 or 4501.

A few passenger car notes in response to the above lists and comments.
I'm fairly certain that NS 19 (ex N&W diner 494) is configured as a lounge-diner.
NS 29 is former N&W coach 533, not 532. Watauga NRHS 500 is a coach, not a diner.The car listed as "277" is ex SOU, nee C of G combine 727, now the handicapped access car at Cuyohoga Valley. It was a former Roanoke Chapter NRHS car. Iaeger & Southern 9401 "Pocahontas" was an ex-UP 10-6 sleeper. Roanoke Chapter NRHS N&W coach 538 was never used in the steam train, it was aquired as a parts car with 512. It does still have a very original interior. Roanoke Chapter NRHS 1827 was just sold to Monticello Railroad Museum. Absent from the list is N&W baggage-tool car #1407. It is now a Roanoke Chapter car also, and is pretty much the same as it was in December of 1994. The local rumor mill has it that NS has aquired several passenger cars. What is fairly certain is that an ex-Southern combine in MofW service has been moved to Altoona for evaluation. Finally, Robert B. Claytor's office car always was NS 3 / N&W 500, the "Claytor Lake". Graham Claytor may have used Southern # 8 some in the 1970s. I would also beware of making sweeping comments about train colors. Remember, Wick Moorman is from Mississippi.

Nope...that car is an ex-SP 12 double-bedroom sleeper. It is at rusting away at OSRM in Knoxpatch. It had belonged to a guy who worked on the cars of the NS steam program...a carman of sorts.

You are right, Termite. The older I get, the worse my "CRS" gets. At least I remembered the "Pacific" part. As far as the 9401's owner is concerned, the less said the better.

Was the owner's name Sid Bailey? He was one of the car inspectors I believe.
