As already mentioned, this is not really the place to have these kinds of discussions. They go round and round and before you know it members who contribute valuable know-how are fed up. RYPN is the only place online where people who do the restorations discuss and share their lessons learned. We've had the best of it all; technical, financial, marketing, legal, etc... There are a lot of other websites for this type of discussion, there is only one RYPN. Please save these topics for the 999 railfan websites out there.

There have been good points made about the unique nature of RYPN in relation to the type of discussions that should go on here, but hey, did anyone else notice that this poster is only 14? That means "PRRforlife" was born 28 years AFTER PRR disappeared into PC, and probably 38 years after steam vanished, and yet he's STILL interested in steam restoration and railroad history. That makes him a part of a very small minority of teens. Let's cut the kid some slack! He, and others like him, are the future of this hobby. I hope he's not been discouraged by the dismissive nature of some of the posts here- I noticed only two posters made an effort to channel his enthusiasm in a meaningful direction. If young people are frozen out of this hobby by the old and wise, then their wealth of knowledge and experience is pretty much going to die with them. I'm glad he's already volunteering somewhere- I hope they treat him kindly and encourage him.

I was curious about the K4, here it is.

http://www.trainweb.org/horseshoecurve-nrhs/K4s.htm

I will save you the page turning why the K4 progress was slowed or stopped

http://www.trainweb.org/horseshoecurve-nrhs/K4s_p27.htm

I think they are committed to getting the K4 restored, its a long process by now.

If anyone has fresh updates on it, post it up.

Although most Pennsy engines are in Strasburg, most likely never to run again, if you could restore any pennsy engine to operating condition, which one would it be? For those who don't know about surviving pennsy engines go to steamlocomotive.com where there have a list of surviving pennsy engines. Please tell me why you would want the locomotive to be restored if you can.

it starts with a dream, without that dream you have nothing.

My father and I were with the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society years ago, just a film/slideshow railfan meeting group, when suddenly it came forward that the group was going to aquire/move/restore 767 on display in Lawton Park.

Jawdrop time. (767 = 765)

Ahh, the W&W #4. I saw her under steam in the early 1980s after her restoration.

Earlier in this thread you said you were only fourteen, how could you have possibly seen anything in the early 1980's?

I was quoting what another person said but something didn't work right.

It's refreshing to hear someone so young being interested in steam railroading. To answer your question, I would be quite happy to see #1223 steaming again on the Strasburg RR.

Same exact answer as me. I can't honestly say why I would like to see this steamer restored, but if I had to choose, this would be my first choice.

I'd love to see the E6 under steam, but she's a bit high-drivered for Strasburg's bucolic run. 6755 is probably the one extant PRR steamer that could earn her keep as a mainline excursion engine, but I don't have any idea what shape her boiler or running gear are in... she might be (probably is) a basket case.

Its all daydreaming anyway... I doubt any of the collection is going anywhere any time soon.

PRRforlife, I'm happy and reassurred to see a young man of 14 years interested in steam railroad preservation. I first became involved in preservation when I was 15, only about 20 years ago. With your forum post, I think you've just received a full-spectrum welcome (or non-welcome) to the hobby.

I admire your hypothetical from the standpoint that it shows you're thinking, and interested in engaging others in that thought. You will make many friends in the future during conversations such as these. That being said, this probably isn't the best forum for that particular question. However, it's also not the 'crime of the century' either. Obviously, you've experienced a variety in the tone of the responses to your original post. In my experience (especially when I was young), I found many old head preservationsits less than welcoming. Don't be deterred. They're generally all good people and ultimately you will acquire their friendship. But when you first get involved, you may find the welcome chilly. As others have posted, get involved. Volunteer, but when you do, keep your mouth shut and your ears open. (It's easier to grin from ear to ear when you're not talking anyway!) Ask questions, but then listen and absorb the answer. Be a hard worker first and big talker second. Just wait and see- opportunities will come along.

I was going to suggest the one from the Quarry........

But I decided I'd rather have a clanky, leaky old H-hog, preferably one of the smaller of the class. Consolidations were the most numerous steam types constructed, and a smaller one would be the "right size" for a decent tourist line. Isn't the Belpaire boilered specimen in Roanoke a PRR clone?

If it is a PRR locomotive to be restored, I'd say either a GG1 or the I1 Hippo.

The GG1 has many available and I would purchase one and set it up to MU with a B-unit diesel.

I have several Bowser I1's and I like them very much.

If you are talking about a rebuild from scratch, I'd nominate either an FF1, a P5a, T1 4-4-4-4, or a Q2 4-6-4-4.

Late in this post, my vote goes for the 6755. The PRR best!
