Saturday, July 17th

Phoenicia

George Peck will lead a crew Saturday morning starting at 9am in Phoenicia. He plans to do work within Phoencia Yard.

Paul Sternitzke will lead an OOS crew starting at West Hurley at 10:00am. Plans are to cut between Stoney Hollow and Hurley Mountain Road. Bring chain saws, weed wackers, and pole saws for overheads.

In Kingston, we will be continuing our summer service there at 1pm at Westbrook Lane. Cornell Street Yard will open about 10am for preparation work for the afternoon run.

Sunday, July 18th

George Peck will be at Phoenicia yard starting at 10am.

Cornell Street will open at 10am Sunday.

Monday, July 19th

Earl Pardini plans to lead a crew making track repairs on the west end of the railroad. Plans are to start at 9am at the Phoenicia yard.

Wednesday, July 14th

Joe Marsh, Dick Wilhelm and Paul Sternitzke worked on the sickle bar cutter at West Hurley and mowed the south rail of the track from MP 10.5 to 9.3.

Thursday, July 15th

Joe Marsh, Dick Wilhelm and Al Schoessow made repairs to the hi-rail dump truck and Joe also replaced one of the panes of glass on the car mover.

Saturday, July 17th

In Phoenicia, Al Johnson and Gary Lowe worked on Coach 702.

Also in Phoenicia, George Peck, Mike Adsit, Derek Stapleton and Dave Mason painted one side of the transfer caboose:

On Saturday, the Kingston train ran "Dad's ride free" day. Al Schowessow was engineer, Walt Otto conductor, Mark Glaser and Ron Epstein flagmen, and Peter Fluchere and Ultan Johnson manned the ticket office.

Sunday, July 18th:

Earl Pardini, Al Schoessow, Mark Glaser and Bob Blake worked on many projects in Kingston. From Mark Glaser:

"On Sunday, at Cornell St. Yard, 401's batteries were serviced as was the auxilliary backup lite/horn battery on the caboose. Tie cart was lifted and positioned for wheel bearing replacement with the backhoe. Restoration work continued on RS-1 400 (Chitty) , the short hood's nose and north side doors were scraped and primed. Backhoe crew leveled and filled rough ground on west side of Westbrook Lane Station as well as repositioning upper deck of loading platform. A general cleanup of the station area was performed as well as the placement of a concrete parking space barrier to protect the railing on the front of the ticket booth."

Monday, July 19th

On Monday, Earl led a crew consisting of Al Schoessow and Tom Healy, and inserted three ties east of Campground Crossing and did ballasting and tamping at MP 22.7.

Paul Sternitzke will lead an OOS crew starting at West Hurley at 10:00am. Plans are to cut between Stoney Hollow and Hurley Mountain Road. Bring chain saws, weed wackers, and pole saws for overheads.

Paul Sternitzke will lead a brush crew with the sickle bar cutter in Kingston, mowing the line from Cornell Street to Washington Avenue and back. They will meet at Cornell Street at 10am and he will need a 3 man crew.

Dick Ray, Dave Sigafoose and Dick Wilhelm continued work on the ESRM's car mover at Phoenicia.

Friday, July 23rd

The Friday train crew consisted of Al Schoessow, John Prestopino, and Neil and Kathy Isabelle. Tom Healy manned the ticket box in Mt. Tremper.

Saturday, July 24th

The Phoenicia Saturday train crew consisted of Dave Heick, Dan Howard and Bill Kaba. Tom Healy manned the ticket box in Mt. Tremper. Joe Logiudice was dispatcher.

The Kingston Saturday train crew consisted of Al Schoessow, Ray Farrell, Walt Otto, and Joe Klapkowski. The theme was Teddy Bear train rides. Earl and Mimi provided music, Pat Smalley read stories, and Joe's kids packaged and distributed animal crackers and juice. Ultan Johnson sold tickets.

In Phoenicia, Al Johnson and Ed Palmatier worked on coach 702.

Also in Phoenicia, George Peck, Derek Stapleton, Mike Adsit and Dick Wilhelm put several ties into the west end runaround, putting it back in service.

At Stony Hollow, Paul Sternitzke, Steve Kijak and I continued cutting wide enough for the spray truck from MP 8 to MP 7.2:

Sunday, July 25th

In Kingston, Paul Sterntizke, Bill Sternitzke and George Cook ran the sickle bar in-gauge from Cornell Street to Washington Avenue and back.

Also in Kingston, Earl Pardini, Al Schoessow, Ed Winstanley and Ed Mead took rail from C9 and cut it to length for Hurley Mountain Road.

In Phoenicia, George Peck worked in the yard.

Tuesday, July 27th

On Tuesday, July 27th, Earl Pardini will lead a special crew that will be changing out the broken rail in the Hurley Mountain Road Crossing (County Route 5, MP 5.95), working with the County who are repaving the road tomorrow.

Earl could use as much help as possible moving the rail to the worksite, installing it, and performing whatever other repairs are necessary to upgrade the crossing to full status.

Earl will be meeting crews at 8am tomorrow at Cornell Street and moving over to the crossing area between 9 and 10. If you need to find Earl's exact location tomorrow, you can call him on his cell.

The work may continue into Wednesday.

I will be up in the Catskills area this weekend and I was looking into riding the CMR on Sunday, so it is my understanding that the "Esopus Scenic Train" would be the only train running on Sunday. Does boarding the train at Phoencia provide a longer ride at the same price as boarding the train at Mt. Tremper?

The price is the same if you board at Phoenicia or Mt. Tremper, and the ride is the same length. By boarding at Phoenicia you will miss the short layover there when you board out of Mt. Tremper.

Although we are not running in Kingston on Sunday, you are welcome to stop by Cornell Street yard. The crew there will be happy to show you around.

Tuesday, July 27th

Earl Pardini led a crew consisting of John Patane, John Prestopino, Al Schoessow, Steve Gollow, George Cook, and George Peck and Ed Winstanley. They dug out the crossing at Hurley Mountain Road, and replaced one rail and several ties. The County will be replacing the asphalt soon. This crossing will then be back fully in service for the first time in several years.

Today, Dave Sigafoose, Dick Ray and Dick Wilhelm continued work on the ESRM's car mover. They improved the fuel system and did much cosmetic work.

The 702 crew will begin early at 9am.

Saturday, July 31st

Al Johnson continued work on the 702.

George Peck and Derek Stapleton did work around the yard and later did tamping at MP 23.3.

Paul Sternitzke, George Cook, Chris Bigham, Steve Kijak and I continued work on the ROW from MP 7.5 to 7.1, widening and cutting overhead branches that could hit equipment:

Mike LaLonde and Al Howes removed stumps at the future siding location with the crane at Shokan.

Our train crew in Kingston consisted of Al Schoessow, Ray Farrell, Mark Glaser, and Earl Pardini. Ultan Johnson was ticket agent.

Our crew in Phoenicia consisted of Dave Heick, Bill Kaba, and Dan Howard. Tom Healy was ticket agent and Joe Logidiuce was dispatcher.

Sunday, August 1st

On Sunday, George Peck and Jason DiTolla worked in the Phoenicia yard.

In Kingston, Earl Pardini, Al Schoessow and Bob Blake worked in the Cornell Street Yard.

The train crew on Sunday, August 1, consisted of John Patane, Bob Mcdonald, and Walt Otto. Peter Fluchere sold tickets at Mt. Tremper.

Tuesday, August 3rd

On Tuesday, August 3rd, Earl Pardini led a crew at Shokan consisting of John Patane, Joe Logiudice, Rafael Demeglio, Al Schoessow, Steve Gollow, Edwin Winstanley, George Peck, Mark Glaser and Joe Marsh. They started track replacement and repair west of Shokan at MP 17.

Phoenicia

We will have our annual Volunteer Orientation for new volunteers at 10am at Phoenicia.

Sunday, August 8th

Cornell Street will open at 10am Sunday. 400/2361 work will continue under Ernie Klopping.

Paul Sternitzke will lead a sickle bar crew in Kingston, mowing the line "out of gauge" from Cornell Street to Washington Avenue and back. They will meet at Cornell Street at 9:30am and Paul will need a 3 man crew. He plans to start mowing about 10:30am after he changes the sickle bar to run "out of gauge".

In Shokan, Earl Pardini and George Peck will lead a crew starting at 9am. They will meet at the west end of the open area near the toolhouse. Plans are to complete reinstallation of the track at MP 17. Earl could use a large crew.

Joe Marsh and Dick Wilhelm put the new glass windows in the car mover.

Train crew Friday consisted of Dave Heick as Engineer and Neil and Kathy Isabelle as crew. Peter Fluchere was ticket agent.

Saturday, August 7th

On Saturday, we had our Volunteer Orientation class led by Earl Pardini and John Prestopino. New volunteers were John Many, Connie Johnson, Richard Kerimoglu, Doug Senterman, Anthony Bocchino, Dave Cenova. Other volunteers included Ed Winstanley and Gary Lowe. The volunteers were given a safety class on the railroad, a ride on the run to Cold Brook, and a tour of Mt. Tremper station.

Train crew Saturday included Dave Heick as engineer, Ray Farrell and Neil Isabelle as train crew, George Bain as ticket agent and Joe Logiudice as Dispatcher.

George Peck and Derek Stapleton worked on projects in the Phoenicia yard, including repairs to Engine 29.

Sunday, August 8th

Cornell Street: Report from Mark Glaser:

"On Sunday @ Cornell St. Yard the 400 (Chitty) crew continued stabilizing the RS-1's long hood and north side service access doors and radiator louver. All surfaces were scraped, wire brushed,and coated with Rustoleum primer. Mechanical work continued with the loosening of fasteners that hold assemblies to the block that will have to be removed before it is lifted out. The entire yard was weed-wacked. Participating were; Ernie Klopping, Bob Blake, Steve Gollow, and Mark Glaser."

Also at Cornell Street, Paul Sternitzke led a crew including William Sternitzke, George Cook and Steve Gollow. They ran the sickle bar out-of gauge from Cornell Street to Washington Avenue and back again.

How much track had to be replaced at Shokan? Is this in preparation for spraying and further track repairs?

Rob,

Only about 60 feet, which was where a temporary crossing has been installed during a bridge repair. Our line is now open west of Shokan with this repair completed.
