Finally after a year of waiting for the right moment we have managed to dismantle and remove a shed built with wood from a 1910/1914 UP CA/CA1 caboose. We now have to reassemble all the randomnly placed boards and see whether we have a 3 or four of the numbers we have parts of 2,5, and 9 the paint scheme with underlined number and overlined Union Pacific indicates that the caboose was never repainted after the 1952 painting directives, so it will be interesting to see which one this is.

All I could think of was "Good Luck!"

Two comments:
A) A "some assembly required" label would be superfluous.

B) I would presume those protruding nails are going to be removed as soon as possible. And be sure everyone has had their tetanus shots updated.

The nails have been removed already, tomorrow we will lay the wood out and work out if we have one side of numbers and names or parts of two sides. Here is a picture of the glorious shed, this was what drew my attention to it the first time, good job the roofing material was falling off otherwise we would never of known !
Once we have deciphered it i will probably glue /nail the important parts to a frame for posterity (or until we get the complete CA 1 in the scrapyard here) .

Are you using the wood or just trying to piece together the number?

Im not sure what to do with the wood, as it appears to be from several CA cabooses and none totally identifiable ! Seems sad to scrap the wood after this long.

Hmm...easier ways to piece together the numbers than this giant jigsaw puzzle.

Perhaps you've already considered and rejected these ideas for reasons I have not thought of. That is often the case when I think I've come up with a good solution.

I would have taken a photograph, printed it sufficiently large, cut the photo up into strips and played around with the strips. Or slice it up in Photoshop and move the image segments around. I like the former idea better than the latter as it's more hands on. Just not as much as handling the wood itself.
