John, I get you are eager but inexperienced. A picture of a bin full of a lot of bits of different assemblies is not easy to break down in any sensible way. I recommend you find some sources of drawings of complete locomotives with labeled captions pointing to different parts, go over a complete hulk at Steamtown with the drawing so you can see the parts in 3 dimensions, then compare what you saw with what is in the bin. Take particular notice of brake rigging and suspension rigging....lots of pins, links, beams, etc that are easy to get confused.

The latest stash from Lenny. I noticed a broken link or two in this batch. They look like they are having too much fun. On with the show!

Can you spot what is different in this photo of the tender?

Sigh.....where to find a complete steam locomotive in Scranton...........

It Doesn't Have To Be The Same Locomotive!

Look at how similarly sized ones are put together and what fits where. Then when you see bit X in bin Y you will recall that something just about like it went in assembly Z in another one and so.............maybe it goes in a similar place on this one?

Unless you want to post individual pictures of ALL the loose parts, which would eat a lot of bandwidth.

GIGO, john.

The volunteer crew of this project has performed a lot of work and I congratulate them for that, but some of the work has been done against the better advice given them. Such as sand blasting journal brasses and axles. Look at the pictures of the driving boxes. So if someone with experience tells you something please listen

John,
Be respectful of others who are giving you great advice! Not all restoration work is done on the shop floor. There are lots of blueprints and Locomotive cyclopedias at Steamtown to learn where all those pieces go. Most locomotive piping and air brakes are located in a similar fashion. The paid staff has more work than they can handle right now, remember their supervisor has already assigned them their days work and they are expected to complete it, and if the volunteers ask rather than demand help, the cooperation level goes way up in my opinion.

Does this John guy sound suspiciously like Lenny, but he learned to use a spell checker?

I note from the set of pictures in the preceeding post that both the E. J. Lavino 0-6-0T #3 and the Branford Steam RR 0-4-0T #43 are now stored under cover in the roundhouse. Any significance to this?

Fred,
Both locomotives were part of the asbestos remediation and are still undergoing some cosmetic restoration work in the roundhouse.

Great to see a steady work force attending to the old Mogul. Once this locomotive is finished, they can turn their attentions to any one of a variety of beautiful steamers!
I'd like to see some of the smaller locomotives come "on-line" eventually. Perhaps the tankers couldbe restored to service, and eventually to lease?

This just in...
This is a report from Dan Barnett on the 565's tender top decking, on what he hasn't gotten done so far.

"Fireman's side is done from the front of the tender to the back. The water intake on the top has a little bit of work to go but nothing major.

The Engineer's side is almost done with the exception of a 3 foot section.

Rust converter was applied to a large section in the middle of the tender and on the Engineer's side collar wall. I'll try to get down there another day this week to finishes the rest of the tenders top decking."

Also to report

Matt went up on Friday August 20Th. and vac. out the smoke box of all the dust and debris that was made from working in there these past few times.

Here's our tender through the open stall doors of track 22 in the Lackawanna Round House

At our next workday Sunday August 29Th. we are hoping we will be washing the tender, so it will look nicer for Lackawanna Rail Fest weekend , what better way to show we are working on the old gal, but to show off her tender and then in a few years we'll be able to show off the whole locomotive.

The excitement over Railfest is coming to an apex, as the final visiting locomotives and cars were put in place today. Len and the crew were in the roundhouse working on DL&W 565 this past Sunday. Here is his report, along with a few photos.

On Sunday August 29Th. We had our Third workday for the Month of August.
Although there were only two of us, we got done a lot.

here's a list of what was completed.
Wash the tender over in stall 14
Sand blasted
Piston housing half moon covers
a few parts that goes in the smoke box
Two bolts for the front driver shoes
Air Wire brushed
the valve gear slider channel's
And set up our display for the Lackawanna Rail Fest September 4,5Th.

This is a photo of the tender on the table after it was washed.

This is where the valve gear slider goes.

All set up for the Lackawanna Rail Fest for Labor day weekend
Note: tender is push to the locomotive.

Our next workday will be held Saturday September 18Th.
Work will continue on the inside of the smoke box with cleaning and painting with rust converter
We will be working on a plan to start the restore of our tender.
We need to put together a plan for getting parts made for Lead truck and Front driver

Take care all

Following is the Post Railfest 2010 report on the lovely 565...

This was the second year that Project Lackawanna 565 was part of the Rail Fest , Last year we just placed a few of her parts that we had completed, But this year with the help of Garry Bensman we pulled out all the stops with the locomotive completely bolted and welded back totogether and not sagging.
This was also the second time that stall 22 was open that the visitors could see the old gal from the out side.
This was the first time in the history of Rail Fest that her head light shined bright. as it sat in the front of the smoke box floor. next year it will be mounted on the cover once the cover is back on the front.

I gave a few personal tours of 565 and had a few people in cab of the locomotive. all were thrilled that they were standing in a real Lackawanna Steam locomotive inside the lackawanna round house.

At the end of the day on Saturday I rang the DL&W bell of No. 365 for 30 seconds for a few tourist that were taking audio and wanted to her the bell.

Also while being there I did some work on her parts that we had sand blasted at our prier workdays by painting them with the rust converter.
It was a great day!

Len.

At the risk of sounding ignorant or stupid, what prevents 565 from renewal to operational status? A great deal of work has gone into bringing her forward to cosmetically repaired and preserved.

Not having an clue, I was going to let the previous question go unanswered, but here is Len's response...
Hello Mr. Glueck,
The biggest reason why we are not restoring her to operational condition is because we are missing quite a bit of parts to her, along with that the locomotive is pretty much worn out!
She was built 1908 and in her 102 years she has been used quite hard.
Here's a list of what needs to be done to have her operational.

Crosshead (at least one) needs to be made new.
Ash pan
Grates,
all the linkage that goes with the firegrates
new staybolts
ultra sound test
new flues
new superheater tubes and linkage that goes with them in the smoke box
there are a few smokebox parts missing
Left back drive wheel needs a new tire
Lead truck needs parts made for it.
Driver journals for front driver need replacing and shoes and wedges need to be made.
Plus the fact there are only two DL&W Steam locomotives left, and we all know where 952 is located.
I'm sure Gary Bensman could shed light on this too with him knowing what we need to do just to do the cosmetic with her.

Hope that answered some of your question.

I will also add that this project is definitely unique for Steamtown. It is heavily dependant on Len Shaner and Steve Boonstra and their crew of dedicated workers coming in regularly for over a year now. They don't have a fundraising arm for this locomotive's restoration, and are relying on some goodwill of knowledgeable people to craft the parts they need. They aren't restoration professionals, and many aren't skilled in heavy labor or machinery. But they don't mind getting their hands and faces dirty. For the short amount of time they are working here, the results are amazing.

Richard it has something to do with the boiler. Due to the make up of it, please correct me if I'm wrong, it is a lap boiler which requires special inspections yearly. And I think someone told me that would require the tubes to be removed every year for inspection. This would be a bigger expense. Plus they will have 4 operational steamers someday and another would mean more work for a crew that is maxed out. I hope someone can shed some light on this lap joint boiler thing. I'm sure Bruce or Mike could give us more info on the boiler.

Steve,

The boiler is not a lap seam type. There is no reason why the engine could not be put back into running condition other than the amount of money and manpower needed is not available. Does it need a lot of work? Yes. But I have seen worse come back to life.
