Bruce's byline above, " Each one teach one " has a companion,

Each one Bring one.

IMHO, one of the greatest keys to success in a hobby group
is to use those social skills in recruiting, enabling, supporting
others to join in and participate. Not all are leaders, thank God,
but many will participate with a group where they are appreciated
and share in the comeraderie.

I think the media these days lives only to invent scary stories..and they need to come up with new ones every day..

just because some news story says "baby boomers wont be volunteering much!" doesn't make me believe its true..people say lots of things were going to happen that never did..

I graduated from college in 1992..the media that year said it was the worst year in decades for new college graduates to find a job..I remember all the stories very specifically, because I was ready to graduate! then everyone I went to college with found a good job very easily..

then they said the same thing the next year..(no jobs)..then the next year..then the next year..if you pay attention, you will notice they say it EVERY year..

IMO, we get a very distorted view of reality these days..and its always on the "gloom and doom" side of the spectrum..I think its just billions of competing news agencies competing for ratings and advertising dollars..and bad news sells.

in other words..I simply dont buy the underlying premise of this thread..
I think its fiction..
sure, you can find *some* people to support the theory..some baby boomers who will be "scaling back"...you can find support for any theory..and just as much support for its opposite view..no one has interviewed ALL upcoming retirees and polled them on their volunteering intentions! ;)

Perhaps that is right, and if there is indeed nothing to be concerned about then the best days for preservation and for railroad museums could be coming up in the future.
