Post subject: Amtrak FL9's For Sale
PostPosted: Mon Jun 03, 2002 11:10 pm

From railpace.com/hotnews:

"Amtrak has placed six FL9 locomotives for sale. The units, constructed by EMD in 1957, have both diesel and third-rail capability. Amtrak has also placed two CF7 1500 HP locomotives, five GP9 1750 HP locomotives, two GP7 1500 HP locomotives and two SSB1200 locomotives for sale."

Have any of the unique FL9's been either preserved or reserved for future preservation? I remember Amtrak's as being very heavily rebuilt internally. Others are still in use, owned by Metro-North and Connecticut DOT.
Amtrak did have some wiggle room in years past for generosity in "donation" (the selling of PRR GG1's for $5,000 each when their scrap value was closer to $20K, for example), but then again, so would local commuter authorities, right?

I heard that one FL9, Metro North #2021 (ex-NH #2054), is stuffed and mounted at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. Can anyone confirm?

I cut down the message to the part I'm interested in. There was a GP-7 on Amtrak that was an ex-CStPM&O. It was #769 on Amtrak and #160 on the Omaha. Would be interesting and worth saving in my opinion if this is one of the GP's for sale. Though this is just my opinion. Though there isn't a whole lot left of the Omaha there are a lot of GP-7's. Maybe I'll get lucky and win the lottery. HA! Just some info.
Have a good one.

I saw a photo of it being trucked through the streets to be permanently ensconced in the building. At least one is saved, albeit as a playground.

I recieved a copy of the sales offer in the mail today. It lists unit #769 "GP9 1750hp;Built 1950-1954 by EMD; Counter Balance Broken/ Rod Through Side". I believe this is the unit you are reffering too. It sounds like from the description it may have had an upgrade at some point.

If any party is (seriously) interested in these locomotives, whom do they contact?

Betty Ann Hastings, Amtrak's ace dispositions manager. Go on over to RailSwap www.railswap.org , and look for the 5/23/02 post by Amtrak offering the units for sale. Good luck.

Railroad Museum of New England (Thomaston, CT) has CDOT-NH FL-9s 2002 and 2019 on long-long-term lease from Conn. Dept. of Transportation. They arrived in April, and are slated for service this season on RMNE's Naugatuck Railroad (including some Engineer For an Hour sessions). These two were the first of four 1985 rebuilds for CDOT, done by Chrome Locomotive at Silvis, Ill. (old CRI&P shops). Other 1992 rebuilt CDOT FL-9s are hanging around Connecticut, used on such things as the wire train, protection power, etc.

And, after waiting 18 years, RMNE finally has title to Metro-North FL-9 2033. This unit was promised to RMNE in October 1984 (once MNCR retired it- in 1986 or 87, they said), was in service until Nov. 1995, was on the Croton dead line until last fall, and should be moving to RMNE this summer. What's so special about 2033? It is the LAST F-unit built, and was delivered as NH 2059 in November 1960. The locomotive still retains the old FL-9 features such as steam generator, 24-RL brakes, etc.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if they would consider it as a donation to some Midwestern museum since there isn't a heck of a lot of Omaha stuff lying around. I can always hope!
