Hi everyone. I know we've been over this before on the board, so forgive me, but I suppose it's just slipped my mind. When did the CO&E retire their steamers? I know at least one lasted into the early 80s. Who has the locomotives now? Does anyone know where I can find pictures of them in action pulling freight on the Egyptian before retirement? Thanks. One of the engines is at the Boone and Scenic Valley in Iowa.

The CO&E's other steam locomotive, Porter 2-4-2 5 is now at the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern RR in Jackson, MO. This engine has been used in tourist service on the SLIM&S for a number of years, but a look at the railroad's website (see link) notes it's currently out of service.

The CO&E started out as a tourist-only operation and 2-4-2 5 was used on the CO&E mainly in tourist service during the early and mid 1970's. After the CO&E acquired the ROW and took over the freight operations, 2-8-0 17 became the main engine and 5 was sold.

Did a little checking. The CO&E placed 2-8-0 17 into freight service in July 1979. 17 worked freight until September 1986 when she suffered a collasped dry pipe. The CO&E sold 17 to B&SV in February 1987.

On Greg Scholl's website, he has a photo of CO&E 17 switching freight cars in his "gallery" section. See link for his photo.

Strangely, I have videotaped both the engines mentioned. As Jim indicated we shot the 17 all day in 1985, en route to Colorado from Ohio. Even sat in the cab as they were getting steam-up for the day. Mostly switched cars, then ran east with a string of empty grain cars and back to Marion. The day I was there they had some invited guests so they used a coach and caboose and a few frieght cars and gaven them a little ride to a siding, where the 17 continued to a grain elevator with 1 car. Interesting the special went by a crossing with a wig-wag signal which is the shot I got of the mixed train.

In 1990 we arranged for the porter at St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern to meet the 819 heading to St. Louis at the south end of their line(name escapes me)....The shot is in "Steam in St. Louis 1990". While the convention boasted 4 mainline engines this was a bonus engine #5!

As for the CO&E, we have never produced a video with that footage, which amounts to about 20 minutes or so. It was kinda neat to see steam on freight operations, even if it was minimal work.

Looked at one on the links in the earlier posts for Boone Scenic, and this question arises: It states that 17's cab was moved back two feet and her super heater and feedwater heater were removed?

What good did these modifications do? And why?

We spent the whole day with #17 in 1985 on our way to the Colorado Narrow Gauge lines. Enjoyed the fire-up in the engine house, and talking with the engineer. They also had a little critter with side-rods that switched some cars for the 17 as they made a special mixed freight run with some dignataries from Southern RWY. 17 did a lot of switching at Marion, then went east with a cut of cars, and later west passing a neat wig-wag signal that we shot the special mixed train go by.
Interestingly I shot that little porter in 1990 as we were able to stage a meet with SSW 819 en route to St. Louis. One of the members of group was one of my good customers at the time, and arranged to have the engine down there near the diamond(name escapes me). That is one our "Steam in St. Louis" video. The CO&E footage never made it to a "for sale" production. It was a unique short line, and the last of a breed!

Remember C&TS needs help and this is what you get when things are going right...doubleheading up the 4% grade.

Briefly, around the time B&SV acquired their Chinese steamer, they offered #17 for sale. I take it #17 never sold, and is still in storage at B&SV? Any plans for eventual restoration?
