C&O 614 Move

Not to completely change the subject, or to stick my nose into information that is none of my business, but Ross, will the auxiliary tender of 614's be moved with the engine to Roanoke, or will it be staying behind? Also, was that Aux. originally an NS Steam Program tender?

I don't know about the auxilary water tender that is stored at Port Clinton. However, in 1986, NS purchased a canteen that had been used behind the 614 when it was labeled 614-T for testing for the proposed ACE 3000 project in 1985, that was numbered 614-B, this tender was rebuilt and repainted for use behind the 1218 and is now at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

As regards shrink wrapping so that it breathes in a steam loco. application it's easy. The first critical step is to cover all the sharp edges on top of the boiler/smokebox with old carpeting so that the sharp edges do not rip open the shrink wrap.

Then completely envelope the boiler/smokebox down to and over the running boards and secure well with proper ties. This way there's plenty of air allowed in and under the shrink wrap via the undersides of the running boards and the wrap being over the top of the running boards creates an umbrella effect for the running gear. It's not as good as being indoors but it's darn good if you must be outdoors.

The A tank will be going to Roanoke. I'm sorry I do not recall what it was originally, I think it came off the L&N??. I'll find out. Our A tank was never part of the NS program.

Thanks for your description of shrink wrapping your locomotive. It must of been a pain in the butt, well worth it in the end obviously. Guess I can kind of see what you mean about letting the air flow get under and around, amazed it lasted so long. "Good sailing" to you in the future and I hope you continue to pull more rabbits out of your hat! Cheers, John.
