Just a short note to tell everyone that still cares that the gun barrel from "Anzio Annie," the (misnamed) German rail-mounted cannon that was displayed for years at Aberdeen Proving Ground's Ordnance Museum collection, is reported as of a few minutes ago as on a high-capacity QTTX flat car at the Aberdeen interchange, ready for shipment to Virginia by way of Perryville and Enola. Presumed movement is via a local out of Baltimore's NS Bayview Yard back to Bayview, then on a regular NS freight to Enola by way of Perryville.

A late update, as this is a Dec. 20th article:

Quote:
The majority of the gun is currently in place on Fort Lee. However, the heaviest component and perhaps the most feared component - the barrel - is still on its way. The two 12-wheel bogies and gondola of the gun are already on post. They were transported by truck to Fort Lee. The massive barrel will be transported by rail because it is too heavy to be moved by truck.

The barrel itself is nearly half the weight of the K-5 at 110 tons. The entire artillery piece weighs in at 218 tons.

When the barrel will arrive though is not known. Semantik said that a special railroad car in Ohio owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad will carry the barrel to Fort Lee.

Photos were posted on Trainorders.com of the barrel on the flat car in Enola, PA yesterday.

Thanks for the photos. The flat car looks like one similar to the one that hauled the steamer last week. Does the gun weigh that much or do you think it is just what they had on hand?

Later!

I'm sure there's someone out there more knowledgeable than me on this particular gun, but I would guess that the tube by itself weighs around 140 tons.

Thanks!

Perhaps length is an issue as well. Earlier in the thread where were questions about the other large guns that need to be moved, perhaps this is the first of others. Perhaps others can comment if the 50 Cal. 16-inch gun has a longer barrel, which might require a different car.
