The air was yellow as the lone sunbeam shows.

Has the diner been restored as a Diner for operation- static or running?

The interior work is on-going but way far from done. It is not static now. The goal is always operational, i.e. the kitchen. But that may take years. This gem was built in 1928 as a heavy-weight diner. I think the goal is the late 1940s renovation into a steamlined light-weight looking snack/diner car [with a concrete floor and hidden (almost) clerestory windows]. If interested come on out and see her or, second best, see a good web page at:

It is interesting how similar these modernized heavyweight diners are. Here is a photo of EL (Erie) 741 which was modernized in 1950:

More power to all of us who are bringing dining cars back into operating condition!

The car was a full diner until the it was reconfigured into a lounge as of May, 1964. At that time the pantry area was removed and a bar-type counter installed; the kitchen was left intact. It was then operated as a lounge for a while.

The set up of the car allows it to be operated as a diner or lounge. The counter can provide a good working surface for a caterer if we want to ever provide use the car for a fund raiser, etc.

Later this group of cars were operated in a meal-service/lounge type service on the Portland Rose. Some tables were re-installed (the wall mounted holders were never removed) and light meal service was provided.

This group of cars is (Second) #4050-4054. At least one other car of this group still exists and is at the San Diego RR Museum at Campo, CA.
