I wish when people did post ads like that that they are a bit more descriptive. If you don't want to post a picture fine, then atleast give people more info than "three coaches and a baggage car". Hoping people call to find out more info doesn't always work.........if I was in the market I'd leave posts like those for last and concentrate on sellers who listed more info on what they had, some of these vague people with only a phone number you could wind up playing phone tag for days with only to find out what they're selling is junk or doesn't fit your needs/interests and you just wasted both parties time. Then they complian they've had nothing but "tire kickers" calling about it! If I needed a car like that and saw it was in decent condition with roller bearing trucks that ad would have moved to the top of my call list!

Is there a good reason vague ads are posted like that, or am I missing something looking at it with only one headlight?

Another irksome thing about people listing ads, especially on Rail Swap is that they will generally not put a price in the ad. If you don't want me to buy, then please don't put a price. But if you want to actually sell whats in the ad, affix a number to it! I'm not going to call to find out the price, and no I'm not going to make a blind offer. Only the seller knows what the item is worth to him.

You'd be amazed (well, veterans in this "business" wouldn't) at how often people/entities end up "owning" railroad equipment that have utterly NO idea what they have their hands on. Even veterans at such places as Ringling Brothers' circus train shops may have stunning knowledge of just how Budd cars go together, but NO knowledge whatsoever of the difference between Union Pacific and the Baltimore & Ohio.......

It's been amazing how often I've been called in to discern or divine the history of a piece that an associate just tied up thousands of dollars in, to see whether there's some value to it besides the trucks or whatever the guy bought it for.

On Bing, note the large NS yard with roundhouse and turntable still in use just west of this location. Is this an ex-PRR facility?

Yep, that would be NS's Conway Yard. At one point under PRR ownership, it was the largest rail yard in the country, IIRC.

There are in fact 4 cars there -- PTMS: 3851, 7256, 7258 & 1402 baggage car. We know what 1402 is, does anybody have any ideas on the pedigree of the other 3?

My understanding is that the other 3 are ex-New Haven Pullman-Standard cars and that they are more or less beyond hope.

The 7200-series NH cars were built as full parlor cars and converted to coaches in the late 50s-early 60s as parlor demand fell off. They differ from the "usual" NH coaches of that era by having one vestibule rather than two. They all have the fatal disease of stainless steel fluting over a carbon steel carbody.

That's a very nice baggage car.

Seller is also offering the trucks from the aforementioned ex-NH cars in this ad:

includes partial pics of the cars in question.

For $20K? Seems a little steep for non-modified baggage car. Right now there are ex Amtrak Baggage cars on the market for $20k to $25K with the standard Amtrak setup including HEP, 27 Comm, and 26C brakes. I hate to say it but luckily there are other cars from this series that is preserved. Unless the seller wants to come down on the price, I don't see this car being picked up any time soon at that price.

It weighs 65 tons. Scrap steel in these parts is in the $320 to $350 range. Assuming a value of $300 per ton in one piece, that is $19,500. So 20K is not out of line at all for this car. In this case its value in little pieces is higher than its value in one piece.

PTMS, or what's left of it, will indeed scrap these relics. They were also the owners of Western Maryland GP7 22, the last existing WM GP7, that was cut up to recover storage fees.
