Hi all I was recently watching a vidoe compiled from old 8 and 16 mm film showing the trolley lines of the Reading PA area. Very cool by the way but it shows what looks like a T-1 series engine moving from the Assembly shop over to the paint shop. The footage looks to be the later 1930's judging from the car parked in the parking area along the fence. It is color film although not comparable to color film from later years. Does anyone know how many T-1's were produced or how many a year were assemblied? Thought it would be neat to figure out which engine it could be! also in digging through my Dad's collection of Stuff... I found a 2 x 6 board painted gray with Reading Co. No. 11 painted on it in Black. Any of you Reading LInes Guys shed so light on this for me? Paul

I believe there were 25 Reading T-1's produced. Of those, 2100, 2101, 2102, and 2124, are preserved today. 2100 and 2102 are close to operable. 2101 might be operated, but would require a complete tear down. 2124 is in need of a complete rebuild at Steamtown, having not run since the Reading Rambles. 2123 served as a parts source during the rambles, but was later cut up.

Thirty T-1 locomotives were produced at Reading Shops in 1945-1947, using boilers and other components from the I-10sa class of 2-8-0 locomotives. They were used in fast freight service until supplanted by diesels in 1952-53, then in seasonal coal service until 1957. Four T-1's were assigned to Iron Horse Rambles service from 1959-1964.

Four T-1s saw Ramble service, 2100, 2101, 2102, and 2124. As mentioned above 2123 was also spared as a parts source but was later cut up.

I knew that. It was a test, Brian. I rode behind all four on Rambles from 1961-1964. Best steam trips ever.

Brian, in RDG days, 2101 was not operated. Only 2100, 2102 and 2124 were active 1959-64. 2101 may have been held as a spare engine, or possibly as a parts engine like 2123.

2101's first steaming since regular service days in the 50s was in April 1975, for AFT sevice.

Some of the Reading T-1s were also rented to the Pennsylvania RR about 1956. I don't know if any of the rented engines were used by the Reading after that.

No, the Pennsy ran them into the ground before returning them!

Likewise the AT&SF 2-10-4's that the Pennsy borrowed. The Santa Fe never used any of those again, and I am not even sure if they were returned west, or just scrapped in the east where they last ran.

Has there ever been a listing of which ones were used by the PRR? I think #2111, #2114 and #2107 are some of the ones?

According to the Gotschall book released a couple years ago, nine were leased for six months: 2107, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, and 28. Returned by December 6, 1956. I had heard one was evaluated in the Reading shops but it was a basket case and decision was made to scrap this and the balance of the PRR leased engines- can found no documentation for this.

According the same book, it was proposed to lease a dozen in 1957 but that did not happen.

kinda perked my interest on PRR lease scrap dates. They were all beat when returned but apparently some more than others.According to Wiswesser's book shows the leased PRR units were scrapped as follows:

6 = ( 2107,11,12,14,19) scrap date 6/1957
2 = (2115,2116) scrap date 10/1958
1 = (2128) scrap date 5/1960

scrap dates for all, they held on to quite a few until 1960, 10 units in total

I can remember riding up to Reading in April 1960 to try and see the bunch Scheduled for scrapped in May of 1960 but could find no trace. we had no real information but did get into the round house and see the 5 stored T-1'S. Good Old 1251 was out in front of the house running.
