An FYI for all of you looking for square hardware for restoration projects. I recieved a catalog for linemans supplies (elecectrial) from the local supply house that lists a lot of square hardware, including bolts, nuts, and the square spring lock washers. I'm still waiting for prices. Sizes between 3/8 and 1" and depending on the size lenghts of 18+ inches, hot dip galvanized. On the longer bolts the sizes are in 2" incriments but more have 6" of threads.

Be cafeful what you use. Hardware store bolts are generally not used as foundation bolts on locomotives.

From my exprience in sorting and organizaing hardware at OERM, I would tell you to be careful. From what I've seen the galvanized line hardware does not interchange with standard machine huts and bolts. The differance seems to be extra thickness of the galvanizing and the allowance for the galvanizing.

Agreed, some of the linemans hardware that I have seen can only be described as crude. The samples that I have available look very good and interchange with standard hardware. I wouldn't reccomend using anything for something that it wasn't intended for. I found this source working on a wooden car restoration. I have gotten some dud hardware under some reputable names so always inspect before you sign on the dotted line.

I have tried to use some of the steel cross arm braces (about 1/4" x 1") for flat stock. They are made of some of the worst, most brittle steel I've ever seen, much like old bed rails.

FastenAll Corp. has a complete line of sqaure headed nuts and bolts. I have purchased many from them for sawmill restoration work. I have bought them up to 14" lengths (they are even in black) good luck
