Can anyone give me the weight and dimensions of the typical round concrete SP phone booth?

If nobody comes up with the dimensions before next weekend, I'll measure the booth on display at Orange Empire. Can't help with the weight, but "very heavy" comes to mind. Just as a guess, I wouldn't try to load it in a half-ton pickup.

If you get the dimensions and the thickness of the wall, we can use the density of common concrete to get an idea of what the weight would be. Multiply the outside dimensions by about 145 lb/cubic foot minus the inside dimensions multiplied by 145 lb/cubic foot. I realize that 145 is not necessarily the correct density for this concrete, but I think it would give a pretty good estimate( + or - ~30 lbs).

John Smatlak has a e-article from the SP magazine on the booths. It has all the dimensions (which would be difficult to measure), and if I remember right, the weight. I only copied one of the diagrams (see below).

Why would you want to know the weight? It would be very difficult to calculate because of the odd shape and the heavy door, heavy metal door frame, and the hidden rebar. See picture.

As the person who did the renovation on two of the four booths at OERM and placed them. All you need to know is that they are [supply a nasty word here] heavy.

Well, then can you tell me at least how big a forklift I need to move one? :-)

We used the biggest OERM has and it just made it. Lifted it by the roof loops. See picture.

A group I work with in PA moved a concrete PRR booth using a Case 580 backhoe to shove it around over to a tilt-bed truck. I was not there but believe they needed both the backhoe and truck winch to get it up the bed.

Make sure you use an appropriate swear word when describing the weight.

Would have been nice if whoever posted the sectional view of the structure would have also provided the height. With the photo of one of these being placed, we finally have something to estimate that from. The drawing shows these things are 3' in diameter inside, with a 4" thick wall. I estimate the overall height is 8', and the interior height is 6'-4".

The formula for the volume of a cylinder is pi X radius^2 X ht. I calculate the total volume as appx. 84 cu.ft., from which I subtracted the interior volume of 44 cu.ft. leaving 40 cu.ft. of concrete. At 150 pounds per cu.ft. the structure should weigh 6,000 lbs. This is, of course, ignoring the slope of the roof, and figuring that the steel door weighs approximately the same as the concrete it replaces, so if anything, it errs on the heavy side, but I wouldn't want to try to lift one of these with less than a 6000 lbs. capacity fork lift, and only on real short centers; not with the tips of the forks. Keep in mind most lift trucks are rated with the center of the load 2' from the mast, which is just barely obtainable with these phone booths.

Marty found and sent me the article he mentions above, and reading through it, it states that the booths weigh 3000 lbs. Since I have a 5000# forklift handy, hopefully that will be adequate. If not I'll have to move it with the loader which require a bit more rigging. :-)
