Here is a photo taken by Sandy Goodrick back in 1955 at Olivers Yard in South Bend, Indiana. When I first saw it, I thought, here is a freight train that could be pretty well replicated. The GTW 4070 (formerly #3734) could logically be substituted for sister Mike 3741 and there are a number of surviving GTW wood offset cupola cabooses. But then I got to thinking, are there any of these Virginian 50 ton 2 bay coal hoppers still around? Kind of funny that the one thing that would prevent such a replication is the freight car!

There were three(?) coal hoppers saved from the Roanoke Scrap place along with those three steam engines. I dont know if they are two bay hoppers.

The three hoppers at VMT are N&W WWI vintage, rebuilt in the 1930's and retired around 1950. VMT also owns a post WWII 70 ton Virginian 3-bay hopper. We are on the lookout for any unpreserved existing steam era N&W or VGN hoppers. We have three steam era N&W boxcars and a VGN gondola at 9th St.
