Post subject: Illinois RR Museum Question
PostPosted: Tue Jul 23, 2002 11:53 am

Can anyone out there give this stuck in California Burlington Route fan an update on the repainting of CB&Q SD24 #504 (ex BN 6244)?

I might be able to swing a visit to the Museum in Union after a business trip to Tennessee in AugustÂ…

Regards (and wishing I was looking at the 9911/Nebraska Zephyr right now),

Since February (when the website was updated), the roof of the 504 has been needle-chipped and work has been done on removing the short-hood doors and rebuilding/rewiring the Mars light. Work has slowed in recent months, as attention turns to operational maintenance of regular-service diesels.

The #3007 at least has its head lite. mounted back on, and tucked away in a barn between other steamers that need attention. The IRM.has their hands full trying to keep the#1630 2-10-0 running. They could use a dozen or more dedicated volunters in their steam dept. Then you might see some cosmctic work on all the Q steamers #637,#4963,#3007, and Perhaps in your life time!

When I last saw her, 3007 is parked right behind the Burlington Route 2-8-2 #4963 in the same barn the houses the 9911/Nebraska Zephyr – talk about being in good company!

(3007 and I go way back but that is another story)...I donÂ’t believe that any of the Purple Martin cars made it from Iowa to Union. As I recall, the bid price for the 3007 was a bit high, but at least she has a good home where she can rest amongst (IMHO) probably the best collection of preserved Burlington Route rolling stock anywhere.

I spoke with the folks at Union when I visited...long term, they would like to see the engine operate (who wouldnÂ’t) but they have their hands full at the moment with all of their projects so I doubt that 3007 is very high on the list right now (and I wonÂ’t complain to the IRRM folks about that one bit).

I would wager that 3007 is a bit too big of an engine to operate on IRRM trackage and the little Frisco 1630 fills that bill quite nicely. Plus, we all know how hard it is to get out on the main line these days.

3007 received a complete cosmetic restoration by Mr. Wade after she was moved to Griggsville way back in the eighties. The years outside in Griggsville and Atlantic werenÂ’t the kindest, though. Another thing that conspires against her is that she is a coal burner, although the Q did successfully convert several S4 types to burn oil (IÂ’m at work and donÂ’t have all of my Q stuff here or IÂ’d tell you which ones), along with several 4-8-4 types in the O5 class.

Regards & Everywhere West!

PS - Smokebox, I have pictures of all of the preserved Q Hudsons with the exception of "Big Alice" #4000 in LaCrosse...she is on the list!

As with most steam projects, it's all doable--all we need is time/money/volunteers etc. We would certainly love to see 3007 under steam again, but the current project list is:

1630 running repairs;
UP 428 (boiler's done, now running gear and cab)
GN&A 26 (firebox partial sheets)
Shay 5 (FRA certification)

So, we have our hands more than full.

To answer Burlington John, I believe that 4001 and 4002 were the S4B oil burners. On a related note to the photos of 4000 at La Crosse, she looks nowhere as good today as she does in the photo of her on display. I passed by her on the way to my motel on June 19 when we were in town with #261. The paint job is showing its age. She looks as bad as the first time I ever saw her in Galesburg in 1963, coupled tender to tender with 5620. At least she survived, which is more than can be said for the O5B. The 4000 is a locomotive truly in need of a "Friends of ....." organization. Her caretakers obviously require some assistance.

Post subject: P. M. sleeper in UTAH!
PostPosted: Thu Jul 25, 2002 7:28 am

One of the Purple Martin Train sleepers ended up in Midvale, Utah (near Salt Lake City) about five years ago. It was an ex-L&N "Pine" series sleeper- I believe the number was #3456 but I'm not positive. I did extensive research on it at the time. It looked rather bizarre painted L&N blue on one side and purple on the other.

Some of the P.M. cars went to a scrap dealer in Cedar Rapids, IA (so far not scrapped, stored along side the old R.I.(?) depot behind the Quaker Oats plant).
A bunch more went to Rail Merchants (see link), and are still for sale.
