Three of these Montreal commuter locomotives still exist, #46 in Valle Jonction, #47 at Steamtown, and #49 at Delson. #46 is in the ever slow process of restoration. The locomotive is stripped of lagging and is being cared for much better than images would lead you to believe. The locomotive is lubricated and largely intact, though parts are removed and chained for storage. #46 is part of a collection of rolling stock, a beautiful old station museum, and roundhouse with turntable. The right of way is extensive, crosses some elegant pastoral farmlands, and a river. Much remains along this old line of the Quebec Central. No doubt the economic downturn has hurt the effort, but perhaps they can hang on long enough to realize the dream.

Did CNR 47 run at Steamtown in VT or NH?

I believe it was Vermont. A thorough boiler re-evaluation would get her running again, an ideal locomotive for short steam runs on localized track. The loss of her boiler documents after retirement cooled her prematurely.

Believe the example at Steamtown operated for just one season and then came the roundhouse fire. I'm fond of these engines- have seen one in Scranton and Delson. I've often thought of lines where engines like these could be appropriate.

Hope she steams some day!

Roundhouse fire? In Vermont or New Hampshire? She never operated in preservation, out of the brief time in New England. Her boiler records from Canada were destroyed or lost and could not be used to verify her quality as an operating locomotive. Perhaps you are referring to a fire in Canada?
Delson's locomotive is in superb cosmetic shape. I wonder how good Steamtown's is inside? This one has surprisingly little exterior damage, considering she's spent 50 years outdoors.

Greetings:
Former CNR No. 47 ran very briefly in New Hamshire. It was shut down for lack of paperwork, (nothing was lost).
I have always been at a loss as to how Nelson figured he could operate an un-inspected steam locomotive on a common carrier, or why they let him try.
Josh, I worked for Steamtown quite a bit over the years and never heard anything about a roundhouse fire...

I don't think the jacket and lagging has been off #47 since before it operated on the C&C. The surface of the boiler shell may be less than optimal.

One of these would be such an ideal engine for a shortline excursion RR. I always thought they were neat and it would be great for someone to get one back in service in a reasonable operating situation.
Under the FRA rules, wouldn't you have to generate the paperwork (Form 4) anew anyway?

All this makes me wonder what would have to be done for an engine that no longer has any paperwork at all?

Depends on the laws where you are Joe.
There was no paper work for ETR #9 here in Ontario. All the calculations and paperwork had to be done from scratch.

I'm sorry, I thought it was a roundhouse fire in Canada that caused the loss of documentation.

Greetings:
At the risk of hijacking this thread, I would note that in doing a 1472 Service Day inspection as per the updated 49CFR Part 230, you create all the documentation necessary for operating a steam locomotive in the US...

Are Canada's requirements similar to the FRA's in the U.S.?

The regulations vary from province to province, but they are getting tighter and tighter all the time. I do know however we do not require a second water glass in Ontario as they do in the U.S. now. I'm sure that will change in the future too.

Hard to believe that 47 was operable anytime short of a century ago. It has not aged well. It does, however, grace the cover of the newest version of the local Scranton yellow pages, in all it's rusty glory.
