Does NS still have any of the auxillary water tenders left over from the "old" program?

Do you think we will need them?

Might not hurt to have them if NS wants to take the 630 to say, St. Louis or the 4501 to Chicago.

I guess it all depends on what routes the first couple of trips will take. If I remember right the 611 could make it to Oneida before having to take on more water, and the 630's tender holds about 10000 gallons of water.

Is there something wrong with a water stop? It gives fans along the way a chance to see the locomotive and crew, it gives the crew a chance to get down momentarily and it is a great stop to perhaps sell T-shirts.

@bobk

There is nothing wrong with having a water stop.

Excellent time for a pee break. Of course these engines are coalburners, so maybe that's not a big problem.

As a retired RR official explained to me using the outside of a curve to one’s advantage has a lot of potential including empty refreshment bottles no matter if you are on a locomotive or a business car. Personally I hope they have a few stops because it will give the crews a break (GCR 18 at 40mph created the bobble head affect on the crews) and allow people along the line to see more than a brief glimpse of the locomotive. The one thing I do wish for is that TVRM and NS have a long and successful program.

One advantage of an Aux. water tender is that you have more water from a known source making water testing & treatment easier.

Another advantage to fewer water stops is that you're less likely to have a trainmaster or dispatcher end up saying "Get that #*&%^#@ train off of my division, I have revenue trains to run, %*&^#@ it!!!"

depending on the engine and the lube requirements a stop may be required anyway. If you have to stop for the lube then why not take water as insurance? Only advantage in my mind though is that there may not be a water source when you are in need so having the extra water will get you to the next water source, no worries.

TVRM has a water canteen on site to use for longer trips. I doubt a larger tender would be nessessary at this time for the new program.

To look at it another way, we hope you will be needing them. If not right away, then eventually. ;)

Really, though, if heavy, long-distance running is contemplated then 611 would be so much more logical as much as I would like to see 4501 return to Chicago. Let's see what happens with more modest, closer to home running first.

I don't think they have that in mind. I think people are "wishing" too deep into this new program.

Agreed. Let the program run for a year before we start with 611 again. I'm all for mainline steam, but let's take the program one step at a time.

To answer the original question, NS does not have any of the auxillary water tenders left. The new one that was made towards the end of the steam program is now used by Milw. Rd. 261, and the other one now belongs to VMT, which 765 is currently utilizing or will be utilizing for the excursions for Train Festival.
