I'm confused; in Hugh's post is he talking about two different cabs? The one at the cement plant is the same one that had the backhead detail, etc...?

Yes, the one I saw at the cement plant had all the backhead details and was fully equipped. This one was acquired by the Norfolk-Southern steam shop in the early 1980's. This may or may not be the same cab up for auction.

There's also another cab I saw at the back shops in Roanoke that's mentioned above which is apparently still used for storage.

Ok, making sense now. For the record, how many J cabs does anyone think were built for non-locomotive use? And how many exist today? I'm assuming just the two correct? This one at auction and the one at 9th St? The one at VMT is not from a J?

For all we know these cabs may have come from scrapped J's, or perhaps Y-5/6 or A cabs are close enough, and that's where they came from.

Or better yet, maybe they had started building parts for #615 before the axe fell on steam.... ;-)

The cab at VMT is a "J" or "Streamlined K2" style (as far as I know they were the same) and spent most of it's life at East End Shops, so it was definitely made there. It was, however, modified during it's use as a receiving office, and is more squared off and has extensions on the sides. You can see the welds when you are up close to it. It was indoors on the ground floor of the Shops storehouse. It could have conceivably come off of a scrapped locomotive. As I said earlier, the cab at 9th St. was off of an older N&W locomotive. It was shortened for its use as a storage shed. It is definitely one of the old "3 Window" style like on #6 and #475, but it is now only 2 windows deep.

Hugh,

Why be making parts for the 615 and not the 614....was it not the next in line? 14 J's starting with 600 = 613 was the last built, no?

Cheers, Jason

614 was finished, but N&W sold it to a quarry operator in PA before it was put into service, and as such never got on the books. The quarry didn't last long due to overnight flooding, and........well, you can supply the rest of the foamy legend for yourself.

Reckon this will keep a few busy for a while?

It's in a sealed tunnel in Brooklyn, coupled to the old LIRR Camelback.

I know about the Y7, but what was the A1? Was that the poppet-valve prototype 2-6-6-4 that didn't quite make it into volume production? I haven't seen anything of that job, not even a diagram, much less a photo. . .:_)

Well, they needn't have gone to all that trouble--all you really need is an engine that runs on a renewable fuel source---

Any news on what the cab sold for? I wanted to make the auction, but had prior commitments...

It went for $2750.

The Southern Railway water column brought $10k. The N&W cab was $15k, the SR baywindow was $10.5k, and the plywood sided cab (ex-original NS??) was around $8k.

Generally, it looked to me like pricing overall was VERY HIGH and many items carried a 16% premium...

Some signs I paid $30 for on ebay brought $300, baggage wagons $1k to $2k....

Crazy...

Matt
