Everyone trying to sell a piece of railroad equipment in a short period of time tries to claim they're getting some outrageous price if they scrap it. I deal with several scrap yards who pay well, and in the past have called them to determine an accurate price for an unprepared piece of railroad equipment for example a locomotive. None have offered very high prices. Doing this helps to figure out if someone is just blowing smoke when they claim they're getting the crazy price. I am willing to bet this engine, and all other equipment associated with it will be cut up, what a shame.

By quoting an (outrageous) scrap price, regardless of what he is prepared to accept, has effectively ruled out any thoughts or options of donation to a worthy cause.

I'm curious about the Coos Bay #10 identification. These pictures suggest that #10 was an entirely different creature. Any ideas?

Mikerowe: Your photos are an earlier #10. I have a bunch of old paperwork from Coos Bay Lumber Co, that lists the #11 that we have in Campo, and #12 as 2-8-2T's, and # 9 & 10 as Shays (Willamette). The paperwork that I have, later dated, lists #'s 10, 11, & 12 as 2-8-2T's. Then I have some later paperwork for another 2-8-2T, listed as #9. According to that paperwork, #11 was the first, then 12 and 10, all from the same order. #9 came from a later order. Don't ask me why the same number for different engines in a relatively small roster.

Except for the cab and added hand rail on the boiler, the subject loco looks just like #11.

Can you blame them? They want the stuff off the property yesterday and they know if it's left up to preservationsists, they'll sit there for decades more, with people crying about how they can't afford to move them or do anything with them that even resembles preservation at all...

Coos Bay Lumber Co. had a very diverse roster in its day. They had Shays, Heislers, Climaxes, a Willamette, Baldwins and ALCOs.

The #10 Willamette you have in the photo was the very first Willamette ever built by the Willamette Iron & Steel Co. of Portland, OR. She was later sold and ALCO 2-8-2T assumed the position of #10 on the CBL roster.

As the company moved farther into the woods and as trucks brought logs down to the re-loads, the heavy 2-8-2Ts built by ALCO became the main engines. #12 was built in 1929 while #9 was the last built in 1935. Both were scrapped in 1956 when the last of the diesels arrived. #10 was donated in 1961 to the Oregon Museum of Science & Technology to be sold as a fund-raiser in an auction. #11 was held in stand-by and actually replaced diesels occasionally through the mid 1960's before she was donated to the Campo group.

I believe Alco #10 spent some time in Nebraska before going to the Midland in Baldwin, KS. It was stored on the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad.
It was owned at the time by a since retired BNSF middle manager. He could not find a suitable restoration spot for it, so he sold it. I have been in the cab many years ago, around 1988 or so.

Hello I am new here. I heard about this locomotive ex-Coos Bay Lumber Co. #10 2-8-2T being for sale. I try to buy it myself but I couldn't. So I am wondering what happen to it now, Did someone buy it or did it went to scrap?

I do hope that someone did buy it because it is very rare to find an 2-8-2T for sale. I hope the owner of Coo Bay Lumber Co. #11 2-8-2T out in Calif. Because I know they are rebuilding #11. So I do hope the owner of #11 got ahold of it.

So what really happen to it (#10), Did someone buy it or Did it went to scrap?

Thanks,
Brian Waller

First off, welcome to RYPN. Second, you have to have a bunch of money if you want that old gem. So, on that note, how much was the asking price (might be good to know for a prospective buyer)? As for it having been scrapped, I have no idea. Maybe a phone call to the owner might answer some questions.

"First locomotive built in the West"??
how could they make that claim with a straight face?
That locomotive was built in 1922..

Southern Pacific Sacramento shops was building locos by the 1880's, and built hundreds of locos before that Willamette engine, and im sure many other places in the west built many locos before 1922..so how could they possibly claim "first in the west" in 1922?
very odd..

Williamette was looking to take market share from Lima and this is why Lima came out with the "West Coast" shay locomotive. I am sure that they were looking to promote the first "geared logging" locomotive built in the West. I have a builder's plate from the Prescott, Scott & Co. from 1881 in San Francisco. There was some locomotive building on the West Coast and Sacramento Shops is a prime example. Williamette simply forgot a couple of words!!

I spoke to the owner last week in regards to the tender. He wanted $8000.00 at least for it. It has been cut out in the center, the only thing remaining of the tank is the outer shell and ther flat floor on the rear with the fill opening. I'm sure I'd have at least that in trucking it from Florida to Coldwater. I didn't even make an offer. Hopefully someone out there can save the locomotive at least.
