Very nice! I'm a bit surprised, since I was expected something inspired by the C&O, rather than the Southern, but I have to say I much prefer the green scheme.

Question to Ross, How come the Rods were not removed? So that the wheels could be painted, with out taking chances of the paint dripping on to the rods.

Ever removed and replaced a set of side rods? ;)

Given the choice between pulling the siderods and scraping a few paint drips off of bare metal, I have no doubt which one I'd choose! For that matter, a bit of oil on the rods would probably prevent the drips from sticking.

Of course reaching the part of the wheels behind the rods is more difficult than it would be without them, but even given that, it's still easier than pulling the rods.

Bob Harbison is exactly right, it's much easier to wipe off a few paint drips vs. removing and reapplying the side rods which is no small task.

Bill Gates knows a few things about PR and luxury rail travel... did he buy enough of CSX to have a controlling interest?

I've always wondered what a Southern Rwy. 4-8-4 might have looked like. 614 with a Sylvan green jacket, cab, cylinders, etc. might give us a good idea. Unlike the rendering, I'm hoping the wheels and pilot might stay black.

Also, SR probably would most likely have moved the headlight to 3" below center of the smokebox (like 2716).

It's a good day to dream.

Ross, you were looking good today with paint brush at the ready as the finishing touches were being applied to C&O 614 in her new Greenbrier Presidential Express Livery.

He chartered UP 844 and SP 4449 for a personal trip out of Tacoma when they were both through the area a few years ago. I personally saw him and his cronies step on board...

614 looks really good in "John Deere Green", much to my surprise. Chris does very good work.

I could see where a color scheme like that might catch on!

In regard to the topic of colors selected on the 614, it would appear to me, that the colors on the 614 closely resemble the colors on the cars of the American Railway Explorer ( ex AOE ) that were repainted in Denver. A number of the cars were repainted for the planned service and some cars were in primer on the day worked ended... No matter what, the colors seem remarkably close..

It would just appear to me, that the colors ( perhaps not the paint schemes ) seem like a carry over from A.R.E..... Just an observation.... Perhaps Ross can comment....

Dean,

The closeness of the two color schemes is truly coincidental. 614's scheme was created by Bob Lorenz of Freemont,Ohio who has done my design work starting with the Golden Spike Centennial Limited ( 1969) and Bob had no awareness of the ARE colors.

The cars of the GPE will be done in a layout created by famed designer Carleton Varney the CEO of Dorothy Draper & Co. It's not a scheme I would have picked but it is a scheme that Mr.&Mrs. Jim Justice like.

The ruling formula at work here is very simple.....he who pays the bills picks the colors!!

Thanks for your interest. Ross Rowland

Ross,

Could a case be made to the CSX on a higher reliability factor for the 614 due to 100% roller bearings on all axles + all motion parts? (except the cross-head shoe....which I assume rarely causes issues with overheating, etc.) This puts the reliability focus back on the boiler but to my recollection, Class I's seem to be overly concerned with hot boxes.

Beautiful paint job none the less!........this has an influence from another famous locomotive with a similar paint scheme..... http://0.tqn.com/d/dc/1/0/L/g/nmah_train.jpg

Having this "billboard" will hopefully help in opening the consideration for steam in the future. UP, NS(revisted).....CSX?.....here's hoping....

Best wishes on the launch of this venture.

Regards,

Randy
