 Post subject: ACL Birmingham Whereabouts?
PostPosted: Wed Jul 31, 2002 11:21 am

Do I correctly recall seeing an announcement that the ACL diner BIRMINGHAM has recently been acquired/moved somewhere with plans for operation? I have looked but can't seem to find it. This would be of interest to the ACLSALHS folks.

Where has the car been and what shape is it in?
Thanks,
Stephen

OK, I guess I was daydreaming. That or its a deep, dark secret that slipped out. Or is it something to do with the ACLSALHS? HaHaHa! Just wondering.

Actually, for those of you that are interested, the ACLSALHS web site (link below)has a "Surviving Equipment" database that is open for additions by persons having knowledge of ACL, SAL and related roads that are tucked away in museums or privately owned. Of the ACL LW diners, I am aware of the Moultrie, Fitzgerald, Tarboro and now (unless I really was daydreaming) the Birmingham. So out of the 11 ACL 36-seat diners in the Pullman-Standard class of 1950, there are at least 4 surviving.

Can anyone PLEASE confirm the Birmingham and where?

Thanks
Stephen

I forgot about the Greenville, which is already in the database.

The "Birmingham" is currently sitting in Lansing, Illinois, where it was used for a time as an ice cream parlor. Work on moving the car to the Illinois Railway Museum is underway, although I'm not sure that there is a concrete timetable in place for the move. Operation is not an immediate concern; among other things, the car has some broken windows, and it also had an extra door cut in one side when it was an ice cream parlor.

Thank you Frank. Thought I was going crazy for a bit. Glad to know another of the ACL's cars is going to be preserved!
