The Lookout Mountain as well as (at least) coach 1067 are currently in service on the San Luis and Rio Grande in Colorado. Attached are two pictures of them both taken on the excursion trip over La Veta pass this spring during the RPCA conference.

Interesting. I figured in the later years up til 1994 that HEP worked its way into the consist, as I've seen HEP car NS 39 in some trains.

In regard to the cars owned by the WMSR, could they theoretically be tacked onto an Amtrak train since they have the approved trucks, running gear, and HEP? Or would they require an inspection? Last I remember there are 2 coaches that occasionally have been seen in CSX's business train for the Kentucky Derby, so I didn't know if cars like the Man O'War could be added to an Amtrak train for deadheading purposes.

Here are a few notes and corrections to the list on the previous page:
None of the heavyweight cars were wrecked and scrapped in the 1994 wreck in the yard in Virginia (Lynchburg I believe???). They were all long gone from the roster after the wreck in the Dismal Swamp.

The 1035 was shopped at Hayne and emerged as the open air car W. Graham Claytor Jr. and was renumbered 1070.
The 1038 is indeed in Oak Ridge.
The 1044 was converted into an office car.
The 1046 was sold or donated and went to a Boy Scout Troop in Greenville, SC
The 1067 and 1068 both went to the Mt. Hood and 1067's current status is above. The 1068 is still with the 1067.
The 1081 and 1086 both went to the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railway and are now at Spencer Shops (NCTM) I believe.
The 1087 went to scrap after the Dismal Swamp wreck along with 1069 and 4061.
At the moment, I can't find my notes on 3659. Somebody help me out here.

Also......one of the coaches in the series 841-845 (or 846 if you go outside the excursion car roster) is now in the CSXT office car fleet and painted blue? Was that one of the cars that went to the NYS&W at the auction?

Also the 2209 was not a former Southern Coach but was originally 1949 14-4 sleeper the Tennessee Valley.

The Iager and Southern car named Pocahontas is a former Southern Pacific Sleeper and still is a sleeper on the inside. It is rusting away in the Southern Railway Station in downtown Knoxville.

I believe the 3477 that Atlanta Railcar owned was former Union Pacific or C&NW.

The converted Pullman Sleepers 1032-1046 were all retired from passenger service in the late 1970s (after 1976) and converted to other uses, disposed of or sent to Wreck Derrick service. According to the Railway passenger Car Annual volume IV 1978-79 many were used in the early excursions. The annual also says that several ex-CofG cars were also used in excursion service but most of them were donated to NRHS type groups by the late 1970s as well. Several (906,907,661,662) were used in NS excursions when their owner was the host/sponsor of the excursion.

3659 was used by TVRM after the Dismal Swamp wreck but NS eventually sold it to the Ohio Central where it remains today.

For at least two years TVRM leased cars from the New Georgia to operate the Autumn Leaf Special to Onieda. These cars, plus TVRM's cars and the 4501 enabled the NS to operate two trips simultaniously during the popular fall period. I'm not sure if the museum files have any of the consists for these trains but I will try to look.

I just remembered, TVRM used at least one of the Sou, ex CofG, dome cars on an excursion to Atlanta in the late 1970s. I don't remember if it was the 1602 Dome/Parlor or the 1613 Dome/Coach.

When would the ex-Conrail office cars have been used in the excursion program? Merger was several years after the program ended. NS research cars including the ex-Conrail ones almost certainly were not part of the consists. The former Southern geometry car may have been thrown in a consist for deadheading or company use, but having spent several miles on the Georgia Division on this car, I can say it's use would have been very limited, as it is NOT set up for passenger use. It and the other research cars are for R&D and engineering use and are configured as such. Further, there are N&W coaches listed that almost certainly did not see use in the program due to the timing of their dispositions.

Not trying to throw cold water on the list, but there are also many exclusions from the rent-a-wreck fleet and PV lists. Sourcing of trips used would clear up many questions for those cars that were not part of the regular NS/Southern fleet in later years (post-Swamp wreck).

"j32885's" listing was apparently simply an attempt to consolidate all NS passenger equipment whether or not it was used on steam excursions. I can say for a fact that unless NS has used any in the past month or three with 630, the former CR cars were never used by NS public excursions. Only ONE of the former CR cars, coach 27, was suitable for "public" use on an excursion, save for some "executive class" service. There was also, admittedly, the ex-ATSF full-length dome, and CR also had a "buffet-style" diner which I think apparently went to CSX. The other cars were sleepers, dorms, or "classic" business cars similar to the lived-aboard PV.



An absolutely complete list would be interesting from a documentarian standpoint, but in the grand scheme of things pretty much trivial. I mean, no one manages to make any extra money off their car by saying it "once rode behind 4501." Now, "hauled a President" or "the Rolling Stones rode on this car," maybe.......... <:-)

I would have to agree that most of the office cars and some of the company cars would not have ever appeared on an excursion. There are exceptions, Claytor Lake for one. One of the research cars did make the trip behind the 4449(?) measuring tractive effort between Atlanta and Salisbury(?). While I doubt the Virgina Carolina made a trip I'm pretty sure the New River did.

The ex-Conrail car NS 26 would not have been used in the old program but has been used in the new program along with TVRM 873 which wasn't around in the old program.

We might be getting ahead of ourselves a bit more but we shouldn't forget coaches NS 43-47 currently being rebuilt at Altoona for the new program (might as well start our list for the new program, twenty years from now one of our children's children will ask the great rypn.cloud what was used on the "new" program.

Not to muddy the waters, but rather to eliminate from further consideration:

1033 is at Andersonville, GA, not 1035

1017 and 1018 are privately owned, gutted, but repainted shells, currently at the A&WP depot complex in Hogansville, GA, having been moved from the Warm Springs, GA area in 2004 along with 3 stainless cars (CNO&TP diner-lounge 3899, SR diner-lounge 3399, SR 14-4 sleeper 2204, all heavily vandalized while at Warm Springs). Both 1017 and 1018 had been modernized with the wide windows which are now filled in with metal plates. The Hogansville depot complex has been for sale.

1065 and 1078 are in the collection of Southeastern Railway Museum; I believe both were modernized by SR, but with single windows instead of the wide windows.

AFAIK none of these cars were ever used in the SR/NS Steam Excursion Program.

This is why I should never post from memory! Oh well, 2 for 4 on the Southern modernized heavyweight "pop quiz" I don't guess is too bad. Here are a few others to add to the list:

The ATSF pre-war Budd from Greensboro was around in later years.
3x N&W 1700s from Tidewater chapter -- former Chicago Commuter Service cars.
Southern Appalachia Rwy. Museum 664 Fort Oglethorpe made some TVRM runs at the end. I think this car was also used in some excursions in the 1970s.
SARM also had a 64 seat NYC "Roach Coach" that had been fixed up and made some TVRM trips.
MTM used several of their cars on some of the Memphis runs.
Bluegrass RR Museum used a Southern 500 series baggage as a commissary on several of their trips.
There were 3 of the "Great Steel Fleet" cars from New Orleans Chapter as well as T&P Budd 461(?)
Has CAGY 3 been mentioned? Former C&NW 3478. Sister to the Atlanta Railcar 3477?

Off the top of my head, private cars handled on Southern Steam Specials out of the Washington, DC, area included the Dover Harbor, Caritas, Pine Tree State, and Jim Bistline's RPO. I'm thinking Bistline also had a caboose along on at least one trip.

I figured that instead of starting a new thread, I would dig up this old one. I have been making a list of the cars that were used in the old NS steam program. however I have a lot of unknown information on it. I do want to mention that almost every car on this list has been confirmed as having been used by NS or Southern with photos, videos, or official documentation with various groups who ran the trips. Also I am constantly adding to the list so don't be surprised if stuff continues to be added.
