Howdy, Folks;
I hope this is not a bit off subject with this forum / interchange. I am currenty working on a long term research project on the Canadian National H6 class 4-6-0 locomotive. I am also working on a HO scale modeling project of this engine. I hope to write a magazine article on this class of CNR locomotives and the model. I am in the process of rebuilding an old HO scale Van Hobbies CNR H6 4-6-0. I am looking for any information that may be available such as histories or photos of the CNR H6's in service. I am especially interested in photos or films of the 1533 / 1325 in commuter service in the Montreal area or in service on the New Hope & Ivyland?
Thanks for your help - David Notarius, London UK (Ex New Hope Pa)

Don't know if it'd help, but 1392's still around and I believe still running:

Although Ten-Wheeler #1395 is kept at the Coopersville & Marne Railway in Michigan, I believe that she is privately owned. I wonder if any work has been done on her; either cosmetically or toward a future restoration to service?

Thanks Les & tyrok1, I know about the 1392 & 1395, along with the 1551 on the Ohio Central, the 1521 at Upper Clements Amusement Park, and the 1531 at the Simcoe County Museum. But I am still thin on the ground on information and service histories of these locomotives. I do have a few bits from Ian Wilson's Canadian Branchline series books, and bit's gleamed out of the internet. Does anyone know why and how long the 1521 was used as a billboard ? Info on H6's used in Montreal commuter service? Or the history of the CNR H6's sent to Australia for the Second World War? If any ever seen US service on the GT or CV? Thanks again for your help – David Notarius, London UK (ex New Hope Pa)

I can tell you from seeing her last week that the answer to that question would be a resounding "no". She's just as rusty as ever.

NH&I's 1533 was #1325 from 1912 through 1955.

#1395 looks far better than 1533 does...even with the recent black dip the 33 went through.

My parents have a ton of Photos of 33 in service on the NH&I, mostly their own taken during the 70's, but also a good deal they acquired from Bruce Saylor....including the shuttle run from St. Claire to New Hope.

Hi Guys; I need some help on the current status of ex CNR h6 class 4-6-0's for my writing project. Does anyone have any news if CNR 1531 at the Simcoe County Museum is going to be rebuilt for service or stuffed and mounted? As of last fall, they were still evaluating the condition of it's boiler and running gear. Also, has ex CNR 1392 at the Alberta Railway Museum in Edmonton been running this past summer? Thanks again for your help, – David Notarius, London UK, (ex New Hope Pa)

1531 is stuffed and mounted. I've never heard any talk of overhauling for service.
1392 was operational this past spring, so I assume it operated throughout the summer.

I believe Robert "Bob" Bennatts owned 1521 at one point in time. He lives nearby in Croswell, Michigan. I believe he sold the engine along with other equipment he had in the mid 1980's. I do, however, believe he has kept the paperwork on it.

Thanks,

TJG

Howdy , Thanks for the CNR h6 info that everyone has mailled me. For those sound recording collectors, Jay Winn of Vintage Railroad Audio Sounds:
http://www.vintagerailroadaudio.com/
has a number of recordings of CNR & ex CNR H6 class 4-6-0's, along with lots of other locomotive sounds. He also has some uncatalogued recordings of the 1533 circa 1972. Anyone has any recent NH&I 1533 news? With ex USATC 0-6-0 number 9 going to SMS and the Mexican 4-8-4 heading back to the ALCo museum, does this improve her chances of her being re-built? Have fun - Dave Notarius, London UK

Dave,
1533 (just the locomotive, not the tender) recently got a new coat of paint. Probably the most attention she's gotten in 30 years. Now what's this about 3028 leaving? What ALCo museum? I thought she belonged to the Great North Eastern Railroad Foundation. I'd appreciate it if you could further clarify where this news came from.

Hi Guys, I'm still working on my CNR H6 project, as previously seen in this thread. Thanks again to all those who have send me info! I am still on the lookout for photos and info for my project. Does anyone out there have any photos of NH&I working working mix freights on the NH&I, especially any meets with Reading Company trains at Ivyland PA? Also, I am still in need of photos of CNR 4-6-0 in commuter service and branch-line train service in Quebec in the 1950's. Thanks again for your help, David Notarius, London UK, ex New Hope PA.

Hi Guys, One of my old friends who still lives back in the states has started a "Friends of Canadian National 1533", page on Facebook. Frank, who goes by the name of Flick (He's a Jean Shepherd fan) worked with me on the NH&I briefly before moving to Lackawanna territory near the Water Gap. He is building an O scale model of the 1533 for his garden 3 rail railroad. Should be worth a look.
