Hey Folks,
Way back when the North Chicago Steam Railway was running their 1892 Baldwin Steam Dummy ,what was the gauge of the tracks? I know this engine was sold off to a concern in Berks County PA. Thanks to all for looking at this post, I know that I will get the answers I need from my fellow members! Paul

How about a hint?

A street railway on Chicago's north side? If so, I never heard of anything but standard gauge in Chicago streets.

The town of North Chicago was too small and just incorporated.

Why do you ask? Paul, what about a little context to help your fellow members' pondering?

Hi Marty and any viewers,
The reason for my query is I am the Historian for Mohnton PA and am conducting a Historical walking tour which will focus on The Mohnsville-Adamstown Railway. From earlier queries I discovered that our Engine #1 was originally purchased by North Chicago Steam railway from Baldwin in 1892. The Engine #2 ,a forney style, was more than likely a NY elevated engine, both purchased in 1895. I appreciate the help

I posted a question on the ChicagolandTraction Yahoo group asking for information on North Chicago Street Railroad steam dummies and got this reply from Roy Benedict:

"James J. Buckley (1918-1994) was the primary student of the street railways in Chicago. His typescript on the NORTH CHICAGO STREET RAILROAD COMPANY (chartered 1886) says of the Baldwin steam motors (page 17):

"'In 1892 two standard Baldwin steam dummys were purchased. No. 11 (Baldwin 12992 9/92)and No. 12 (Baldwin 12807 7/92). They saw most of their service on Sheffield Ave. This route was a feeder to the Lincoln Ave. cable line. Trailers were put on or taken off the Lincoln Ave. cable trains, so thru service was given to downtown.'

"And at page 30:

"'SHEFFIELD
From Clark st. via Sheffield av. to Lincoln av.
7- -92 Steam dummys replace horses
4-22-93 Gas motors supplement steam dummys
11- -93 Steam dummys taken off'"

These builder's numbers and dates don't match the one given for the Mohnsville and Adamstown Railway's "Dolly," Baldwin #12027 built in 1895.

Hey Guys The builder's plate number os 12027 was a assumption made from a very grainy blow-up! In T.T. Taber's book the very same photo I have of this steam dummy is pictured and indentified as North Chicago's #12 (12807) I am very Happy to know the history of our Beloved ''Dolley'' before she graced our valley.
