I belive that the TurboTrain service into WV was known as "Harley's Hornet" ha ha.

Also, at least one of these UA units was stored at Philadelphia's 30th Street station for several years in the late 1970's.

Yes, or The Stagger's Special. It was clearly the most blatantly political train in Amtrak's history, and did nothing to give Amtrak credibility as a serious rail passenger system. I was there with the Akron RR Club to ride it, because everybody knew it wasn't going to run there for long. I don't think we thought that within 20 years the railroad from Grafton to Parkersburg would be gone as well.

Minor footnote, Potomac Eagle co-founder/owner Dave Corbitt got his start in railroading as the Amtrak agent in Parkersburg a few years after my photo was taken.

Paul, yes indeed Representative Staggers did use his influence to cause a mostly useless passenger train to operate (no offense intended to those that may have used it).

But US Representative Staggers did accomplish one very IMPORTANT thing while in DC. He was the author (perhaps with others) of the Stagger’s ACT which deregulated the railroads in the US and is probably the single individual most responsible for saving the US railroad network (especially in the East) from being totally strangled by the Federal Government (i.e. the ICC, now just a bad word found in the history books).

So I raise a glass of my favorite beverage as a toast to Rep. Staggers, and if he also gained a FUN little train for his district I won’t blame him too much.
