Progress has continued this past weekend on Engine 399. The handrails on the firemen’s side have been grinded down to bear metal and painted. They have also been reinstalled onto the locomotive along with there corresponding steps. Bolts and nuts had to be cleaned and lubricated for the easy installation of the handrails. Grinding work has also been completed on the back of the locomotive were the new welds were put in. The weather is getting a little cold for painting, so 399 does not have much more work needed on it. For the final work session (unless it gets painting warm) the remaining handrails will be cleaned up and painted, and stored indoors to prepare it for installation once the other side of the engine has been painted. Paint removal inside the cab will also be completed. In 2012 399 will get two more coats of orange paint.

A small, but nevertheless, worthwhile project in preservation.

Thank you Gentlemen. I am trying very hard to correct many years of neglect the many pieces of equipment we have face.

And don't worry it is more then a small project for an almost one man crew

Completely OT, but I saw an episode of "American Restoration" on TV last night and saw that the Nevada Northern had an air brake test stand restored with them.

It really looked good when finished, how did the final product hold up when tested?

Great question, I don't believe we have ever tested it, that is our third item restored by Rick and Mark has yet to let me play with any of them :-)

Hi Jeff,

All of the stuff that Rick restores does work, that is one of his big things during the process, that is has to work.
