Goodness! I noticed that Boyd Owens posted a couple of FLIMSIES notices of the Hartwell Railroad wanting to lease and restore Central of Georgia 2-8-0 #509 to service, and that the City of Macon, which owns the old Baldwin, is apparently receptive to the deal. This would add to the recent restorations to service of Consolidations that have been out of service for many years. Including the following (as again amended):

Duluth & Northeastern #14 in Fillmore, California

Duluth & Northeastern #28 (ex-DM&IR #332) in Cloquet, Minnesota

New Hope & Ivyland #40 in New Hope, Pennsylvania

Southern #154 in Knoxville, Tennessee

Southern #401 in Monticello, Illinois

Southern #630 in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Maybe there's some hope that other, long out of service 2-8-0's, might also see steam this decade.

*NOTE - I've again amended this list to include the surprise firing up of D&NE #28 as reported in a separate thread here on RyPN on July 4th, 2012. The original idea behind this thread was the news that the Hartwell Railroad was going to restore Central of Georgia 2-8-0 #509 to service. That plan appears now to be in abeyance. And who knows where the "test firing" (or whatever it was) of D&NE 28 will eventually lead, if anywhere. But the fact is, she WAS fired up. She DID run under her own power. Maybe only a one time thing, but still worthy enough as a "long out of service 2-8-0" (as defined above) to be included in this thread.

Didn't Hartwell run steam some years ago?

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Don't forget Duluth & Northeastern #14 in Fillmore, California.

Yes, the Hartwell used to operate former Reader 2-6-2 11 from 1983 until about 1988 when the locomotive was sold to the Kentucky Central Railroad which ran from about 1989 until 1993 when CSX took over the TTI Railroad over whose tracks the Kentucky Central trains operated. Living within 2 hours of the Hartwell it would be wonderful to see steam there once again.

A good candidate to add to the list would be IRM's UP 428.

She felt steam and fire again for the first time in 51 years when test fired in August 2009. Ongoing efforts are still needed to complete the work and add it to the operational roster at IRM, but one would think it likely that it should be completed by the end of the decade for inclusion on your list.

I have been calling this the year of the Consolidation, now that you mention it this should last a decade. Black River & Western Consolidation type #60 should operate this year.

Richard -

I did forget D&NE #14 and added it to the original list. Shame on me as I rode behind the engine on a fantrip in 1962 when it was still in service for the D&NE.

John -

Nothing would make me happier than adding Union Pacific 428 to the list.

Scott -

As soon as she runs that first official trip, I'll add #60.

Does that mean her 15 year flue time clock is running?

While great, every good thing comes to an end. Just my thoughts, but with 4449 going out in two years for overhaul, while many larger steamers will be sidelined, or already are (MILW 261 and the majority of Jacobson's collection in Sugarcreek). I wouldn't call this decade of the consoldation, but decade of the freight engine. More 2-8-0s and 2-8-2s are being added to the list. Reader 108 should run within a few years (to my knowledge, with a name: David Paul Lambert Sr.). I'd love to get the Maine Central 501 running, but that's the problem when you're a high school student.

Above list amended here at the end of 2011 for NH&I 40.

Les

Amended the list again as of 8/9/12 to reflect the operation of BR&W #60. Also removed D&NE #28 (DM&IR #332) due to no confirmation of an actual fire-up.

Afaik, NH&I 40 hasn't been out of service for more than a year since 1991.

Les,

Arcade & Attica #18 (former Boyne City RR) was restored to operation in 2008, after many years of storage.
