For some reason the Frisco was a fan of the Jacobs-Shupert boiler in it's early days. They had some 2-8-0s, 10 4-6-2s and 60 2-10-2s.

The outcome of the testing is fairly amazing. Basically, the testers could NOT make the Jacobs-Shupert fail no matter how low the water level got.

According to the article, it was later found these fireboxes were susceptible to cracking due to scale build-up near the riveted joints. These cracks were virtually impossible to repair at the time which I suppose would require disassembly of the firebox and replacement of the entire cracked U-shaped segment.

Perhaps if they'd come along a few years later when good water treatment was available and electric welding was available for fabrication and repairs, they'd have been successful.

And if a football fan friend asks, "Why is the Purdue team called the Boilermakers?" I'll have a ready answer.
